2014 intention: let everything happen

reflectionsIt seems the thing to do right now is set some goals for the New Year.  Do you do that? Well, I am not going to.  I know that each and every one of the next 365 days will be what I make of it.  My mission is to let the day unfold as it is meant to, working within it’s boundaries, noticing the light or the lilt of my daughter’s voice; simply being here.  My structured temperament certainly does not need more to-dos, especially after an exhausting couple of months of holidays and birthdays.

Though it was thoughtful and detailed, the goal-setting process when I used to work in a corporate office was pretty straightforward.  Take a class, lead a team, or brush up on software skills by a certain date and document my progress.  I could trust that the environment and the daily routine would be fairly consistent.

frame within frame

I have trouble doing the same thing now that I’m not in that setting.  Granted, I’m pretty good at going forward with blind faith, and so far it’s worked rather well for me.   Over the “winter break,” I was trying to work through a few goal-setting templates and found that I have absolutely no concept of what the next year will consist of and I don’t feel that I can map it out.   Goals for how to shape each day are doable, but an entire year, where so much is out of my control? I can’t do that right now.  I am totally flying by the seat of my pants most days, trying to keep the house clean, the bills paid on time, dinner made, and still spending a couple hours every night getting this kid to sleep.  When I have “me time,” I read or blog or paint.

path of steps

Let Everything Happen by Rainer Maria Rilke:

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words we dimly hear:
You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.
Flare up like flame
and make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.
Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
Give me your hand.

Is it ok not to have big goals right now, like learning to scuba dive or doing a teacher certification training? Lol.  I know it is, but I also strive for forward motion.  I am so used to achieving! My 2013 goals were awesome.  But for now, I am trusting that I am where I’m meant to be.

I’m rather spontaneous, so if one day I want to do something, I will definitely make it happen.  Why plan it out? Just do it.

gatewayRather than goals, this year I am forming intentions because I want to allow for some flexibility.  Each of these relates back to an overarching theme of stillness, of being open to possibility, of cherishing the now.  It’s funny, but my “goals” for now are the opposite of achieving.  This year, I will try to find some internal calm, be ok with uncertainty, treat myself more gently.  No small goals for me after all.

“The end of the year is a threshold — a passageway from the past
into the future. An opportunity to stop and listen to yourself, to
hear what your heart is really yearning for, to allow yourself to
ask for what you really need, and to find your way back home –
always to yourself.”  ~ Cigdem Kobu

steps

  • Quiet Time every day – 5 minutes of pure silence and breathing
  • Brave in vulnerability, stillness, uncertainty – This is my new mantra.  Sitting with not knowing will be hard but will get easier and easier, I hope.
  • Self-care practice – nourishing myself with little things
  • Gratitude journal – Every night before bed, read the day’s portion of The Book of Awakening and write in my gratitude journal.
  • Open to spirituality/calling – Notice synchronicity, feelings, etc. Read this type of books.

As always, I am so very grateful that anyone out there cares what I write here.  I hope this new year will be one of meaning and adventure for each of you.

2013 accomplishments

LifeBook Abundance HeartI always like to celebrate and learn from the year that’s just passed.  As in 2011 and 2012, a list of some things I’ve done helps me see as hard evidence the progress I am making.  In dreaming about the coming year, I realized I couldn’t really determine exactly what 2013 had brought me.  A year seems to me a random designation of days.  So I looked back through all my posts to see what exactly I’ve discovered in 2013.  Here we go!

Stats: The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 19,000 times in 2013.  If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 7 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

In 2013, there were 151 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 576 posts.

  • I began the year with a focus on kindness.  That link lists all the various challenges I participated in (26 acts of kindness, the 100 acts of kindness project, etc).  All of these were instrumental in helping me teach my daughter the value of giving.
  • In the process, I made a lot of art to brighten up and personalize our home.  This canvas is one of my favorites.

I also am loving seeing our wedding song lyrics above our bed.

  • Speaking of e-courses, I participated in every monthly One Little Word blog hop and made some lovely connections that way.  “Stillness” was a bit of a stretch for me, but I’m glad I chose to focus on slowing down and will continue to work on it.  As an extension of this work, I wrote about relaxing my perfectionism and letting go of expectations.

  • My husband and I went to New Orleans for a weekend to catch up with each other.  I tell a little about how that trip helped our relationship here.  We started going on dates this year too.  The post I wrote for our 12th anniversary was a popular one.
  • I made more blog books and am finishing up book 2 of year 2 now.

As I embark on year 4 here at Poetic Aperture, I would like to thank you again for being part of this community.  I treasure you and your comments.

2013 OLW “stillness” review

be still necklace OLW 2013This may be the last OLW blog hop since the class is moving to Ali’s website and there will be a Facebook group.  I still plan to check in here on the first of the month because I work to deadlines.  🙂 The blog hop has helped me be accountable and get the assignment done. Looking back at my January intentions for “Stillness, ” I see how far I’ve come and how much work still remains.  I did slow down, but I still flutter about unnecessarily quite a bit.  Some intentions I was successful with, like capturing moments with my camera, not judging others as much, checking in with my goals.  I was good at noticing nature but terrible at making time to enjoy it. Stillness feels scary.  It brings up unsettlement and restlessness.  I have to push through that to get to the other side.   I have learned that it’s easier to just surrender to the present moment than to fight it. As I say goodbye to my word this year, I want to remember:

  • It is a dance – a bit forward, a bit sideways – but my word was often with me (so I did make progress).
  • The unsettled feeling will lessen over time.
  • As a reminder to be gentle with myself and relax, I’m going to move my vision board to my bedroom.OLW vision board stillness
  • Gratitude and happiness grow out of noticing present moments.
  • I want to sit in nature more to better connect with spiritual calm.
  • Creating art = a calm mind.  Do that more.
  • The answers are always within.  Listen.

2014 OLW This year, Ali is running the class through a password-protected area of her own website.  Each month will include two main features: a reflection and an action.  The reflections will be something to think or write about and the actions will be something creative – an opportunity to do something beyond writing. In the past that’s included things such as a photography assignment, a collage, a vision board, creating a playlist, etc.  Every 1st of the month, I will share with you what I did with the prompt.

“Mindfulness” in 2012 showed me how much unnecessary mental chatter I have. “Stillness” showed me that I need take better care of myself and make decisions (since I can’t do it all).  I didn’t even have a chance to ponder a word for 2014… I was guided toward the word “cherish” and I accepted it. “Cherish” means appreciating myself and taking care of myself.  It means noticing the beauty and light in ordinary moments.  It means loving and singing and being grateful.

So here’s to new beginnings. I wish each of you a very joyful and peaceful new year.

You can view all the past OLW posts here.

Regular blog content will resume on Monday, January 6.

House to home #4: the kitchen

Home collaged letters

Here we are at the final post of my house to home series.  In case you missed the others, go see the dining room, the living room (post 1 and post 2), and the window coverings posts.  I’ve enjoyed giving you a little tour.  🙂 Thank you for all your lovely comments too!

* * * * *

Our kitchen was awesome already, since I got to decide where the cabinets would go, etc. when we bought and renovated our house.  You can read all about how we updated our 1961 house in this post from a couple years ago.  There are links at the bottom for the earlier renovation posts.

For now, I simply wanted to add little pops of color.  That under-cabinet bar for the mugs (from IKEA) was a huge deal to me.  Every day, I see it many times, and it always brightens my mood.

Kitchen accents

My sister-in-law found these kitchen chairs and gave me her significant discount to purchase them.  I love how easy they are to clean.
Table before and after

Last but not least, my favorite update.  I learned about this from Pinterest… you can make your own valances out of styrofoam! I know!

I got the foam core from Lowes, cut it to size (outside so all those tiny pieces were not in my house), and used sewing pins and hot glue to make the sides stay.  Then I wrapped them in batting and the fabric and pinned them in place.  I know it sounds simple and of course, it looked it, but it took me for…e…ver.

Valance assembly

But I love how it looks! I used L-brackets and brads to hang them.  Secure L-brackets to the wall and use the brads (they’re under the fabric so you have to plan ahead) to attach the valance to the bracket.  They’re super light-weight so it works.Large valance Front wall

I wish each and every one of you a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year.  I look forward to seeing you in 2014! I think it’s going to be a year of learning, growth, and gratitude.

House to home #3: window coverings

Blog_box

Have you ever thought of your house as a metaphor for your life? In your house are all your experiences and your memories.  In looking around my own home, I realized I wasn’t as comfortable and didn’t feel as peaceful as I imagine I should feel in my home.  So I set about to change it.

I read a bunch of books and enlisted my sister-in-law’s a designer’s (ahem) help with adding color and pattern.  She is awesome and I really appreciated her time and expert eye!  After all the work, I feel much more peaceful at home and I definitely think it’s more a reflection of who lives here.  It’s upbeat. It’s modern.  It’s positive.  It’s open to fresh experiences.  It’s evolving.  It’s comfortable.

This is the 3rd of 4 separate topics/posts in this home redecoration series: 1) the dining room 2) the living room (post 1 and post 2) 3) windows and 4) the kitchen (Friday’s blog topic).  I’ll try to share links to each new item so you can locate them yourself.  Maybe you will get some fresh ideas to incorporate into your own home to make it more of a reflection of you.  🙂

Selecting window coverings is more difficult than I thought it would be!  I had a Groupon for Budget Blinds, so that’s how I decided who to use.  There are choices and more choices and it all adds up pretty quickly and so I had to prioritize.

The most exciting change, and the biggest cost, was replacing the existing faux blinds with shutters across the front of the house.  Now it looks unified, I think.Shutters from front blogShutters blog

Here’s a before and after of our kitchen:

The dining room didn’t have anything covering the windows at first:

For the living room, playroom, and our bedroom (essentially the back of the house), I chose thin linen shades that allow plenty of light through but still provide some semblance of privacy.  The drapes were made with fabric from Spoonflower.

Drapes for our dining room, also made with Spoonflower fabric.

Adding these screen doors to the living room and our bedroom was a must (to me).  They close with strong magnets and allow us to open the French doors in the living room to get some air without letting in bugs.

Not that exciting, but necessary nonetheless, we had hurricane boards cut for each of our windows… just in case.

And to end on a “light” note, I put up twinkly lights in our backyard and we have been enjoying them so much!

Twinkly lights blogThat’s it for windows… on Friday I’ll share my small kitchen update and then I think I’ll take a blogging break until January.

Letting go of my 3-part art goals

LifeBook Abundance Heart

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique.  And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.” ~ Martha Graham

Somehow I got it wedged in my mind (probably filed away in between “perfectionism” and “unrealistic expectations”) that my creative time and efforts are valid only if I am making a profit from them.  Partly this is due to comparing myself to already-established artists and teachers and partly it’s some internal definition of success that I need to let go of.

I’ve had three main creative goals for the past couple of years now.  They weren’t written down anywhere, but were well-known to me and me alone.

  1. Exceed my expectations of what I’m capable of.
  2. Give other people joy and value.
  3. Make money from it.

Etsy headerSo far I have achieved goal #1 for sure.  Over the past two years, in taking all these e-courses, I’ve learned so much and had a blast.  I absolutely love my creating time and never thought this would be my day-to-day.

I hear from family and friends that #2 is true (unless they are making that up to humor me).

#3 isn’t going so well, but I wonder why that’s important to me at all.  Maybe it’s some kind of validation? Like, by buying my art, they are obviously saying they like it and want it? I’ve been doing some photo shoots and have sold a few photo prints on my fine art site, but not many card sales or anything from my Society 6 shop.

Collage

After struggling with this for quite some time, I am letting it go.  I do not want to think about it any longer.  I do not want to compare myself to friends or be jealous of professional artists.

I am simply going to trust that there is some other path for me right now.  I derive great personal value in expressing myself through art, decorating my own home, and gifting little lovelies to friends and family.  The Martha Graham quotation speaks to me deeply.  I know for sure that each and every one of us has Light and Love and Goodness inside.  Each of us has unique gifts to bring forth.  Each of us has a path we are meant to travel.

Here are some new replacement goals:

  1. Learn new techniques through e-courses.
  2. Give myself, friends, and family joy and value.
  3. Enjoy the process.

I must not be ready for whatever I think I “should” have right now professionally, and so I will continue learning and playing for the intrinsic pleasure it brings me.  I will try very hard not to judge myself and will remind myself over and over to simply let it go.  Whew.
