2012 accomplishments

Hello friends!! Only one more day before some serious me-time! Preschool reconvenes after a very long break tomorrow.  Woo hoo!

Since I did this for 2011, I figured I should do the same for dear ol’ 2012.  There were big changes this year and then some more subtle changes.  It’s fun to glance over my shoulder quickly before racing ahead, I think.  Rather than make this all about me, I looked through my posts from the past 12 months to find links in the hopes you may find something that interests you here.  Enjoy!

– Maintained a consistent blogging schedule, started a Facebook page, and reached 100 followers (thank you!)

– Joined Pinterest and Twitter

– Was published in Sprout e-zine

– Began creating art on canvas and other forms

Was the photographer for my sister’s wedding and also officiated at a wedding of a dear friend

– Took some awesome classes: participated in OLW all year, Build a Blog You Truly Love with Liv Lane, Rule-Free Photography with Vivienne McMaster, Swan Dive with Vivienne McMaster, Picture Black and White with Tracey Clark, Inner Excavate along with Liz Lamoreux, A Year With Myself, Now YOU self-portraiture with Kristin Zecchinelli and Meredith Winn, Behind the Scenes with Kim Klassen, Soul Restoration with Melody Ross, Calm Mama, Unravelling with Susannah Conway, Big Picture Bootcamp, and My Crazy Life with Art McCracken.  If you wonder how I had time to take all these, I don’t have an answer.  I guess I squeeze them in whenever I can!

– Was interviewed by Stacie for her website and Kristina for Moms Who Click on   photography

– Created cards and calendars for my Etsy shop

– Opened a Fine Art Shop to sell my photography prints

– Enjoyed participating in fun photo-challenges like Kat Sloma’s Photo-Heart Connection,   the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge, Paris in July, Lori Moon‘s May Flower Challenge, Liv Lane’s now-retired Little Bliss List, and Random Acts of Kindness.

– Met Eydie in person after meeting her through blogging; such an encouraging and creative soulmate she is!

– Was awarded the Versatile Blogger Award, the Liebster Award, and The Very Inspiring Blogger Award

– Switched from the free version to a self-hosted WordPress site so I can tailor it to my/our needs, add fun plugins, etc.

– Read a boatload of books (see full page here)

– Joined a synagogue, attended services regularly with my family, and joined one of the singing groups there

– Helped my daughter transition to a big bed and become potty trained

– Enhanced our backyard garden by adding roses, gerber daisies, containers, and shelves on the side of the house with pots and other decorative items

Whew! I’m putting together a goal-ish list for 2013 to share soon.  See you here on Wednesday!!

26 acts of kindness: spreading holiday cheer

Happy New Year to you and yours.  🙂 I am desperately itching to have some time to myself once my daughter goes back to preschool next week and my husband goes to the office.  Then I’ll be able to put thoughts down here and catch up with you all.  I’ll even be able to catch up on my e-mails, groups, art classes, and whatever else I’m way behind in.  🙂

26 acts of kindnessWe continued our 26 Acts of Kindness (see original post here) by making and delivering some Christmas cards to patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center on Christmas Day.  My daughter, my husband, and I delighted in bringing forth smiles from some patients and their caregivers.

OLW blog hop: wrapping up “mindful” and starting anew

“Mindfulness is bringing to the present the awareness of things that you have learned.” ~ The Dalai Lama

Hello endings and hello beginnings. This was my first year participating in Ali Edwards’ One Little Word class and what a year it’s been! My word for 2012 was MINDFUL.

In January, I said that I hoped “to remember to do one thing at a time, to savor the sweet moments, to notice how things around me feel and sound and look.” I’d say I did that far more than I would have otherwise, but I wish I’d focused on that more. It’s funny to read that my daughter wanted her word to be “fast” in contrast to my “slow” word… she definitely has changed with lightning speed this past 12 months.

In February, I posted this picture and said I hoped to focus on one thing at a time. Ha! I am starting to wonder if that is really possible for a mother of a preschooler.

In March, I noticed that my perspective drastically changed. I wrote that “having more of a big picture view has helped me realize more and more that everything is precious… childhood, flowers, compliments, smiles. Another part of this month is that one of my friends told me to tell “Judgy McJudgerson” to take a hike. I thought that was awesome and have been using it since.

In April, I decided to focus more on accomplishments than to-dos and I tried to limit myself and take it easy. It didn’t work, but it was a noble goal. I wrote this letter to myself also.

In May, I set some big goals for myself: stretch a little each day; rest a little each day; physically stop rushing. Oh well on those! Also, we began eating mindfully and not ingesting so much junk (but that only lasted a month).

I had a blast creating my page for June, playing with supplies I had on hand but had never used. I trusted the process and just created. I shared the creation process in my post.

My favorite assignment of the year was in July when we created a personal playlist for our word.

August was a welcome pause. Ali invited us to let go of our own expectations and accept ourselves right where we are.

Our September task involved celebrating. I looked for ways to show myself kindness.

October was another opportunity to use photos in place of words, which is one of my favorite things to do anyway.

November sort of flew by, and this past month has been the same. That actually helps me let go of my word and gave me space to think of another that I’d like to focus on in 2013. I’m proud of my efforts and my progress with “mindful” and am way better at slowing down, but far from where I’d like to be. So I’ll keep working on it. I feel uber-grateful for all the friends I’ve made throughout the year and for their constant encouragement.

Luckily, my new word ties right in… with the help of my hubby, I have chosen STILLNESS, as in be still. I first thought of “stop” because that’s how I have been able to recognize that I’m doing something in a frenzy. I literally tell myself to stop and it works… I put away the spray bottle of cleanser or the laundry or whatever and take it easy. 🙂 Maybe next year (2014), I’ll be ready for “grounded.”

So here’s to new beginnings. I wish each of you a very joyful and peaceful new year.

If it weren’t for this group, I probably would forget to do my monthly projects! Some of the artwork these ladies do is just incredible! The rest of the participants for this month are listed below. I encourage you to visit them for more creative fun.

You can read other posts related to my OLW here. I look forward to visiting again with you on Friday.

26 acts of kindness: the beginning

26 acts of kindnessWe interrupt this blogging break to talk about the 26 Acts of Kindness movement that is picking up steam across the world thanks to NBC News and Facebook.  (Check out that Facebook group because the stories will delight and shock you.  It’s so awesome to see what others are doing with this challenge.) It’s always healing to focus on what we can do to make the world a nicer, kinder place in which to live.  26 acts of kindnessAnn Curry’s 20 evolved into 26 acts of kindness to honor the 26 children and adults lost in Newtown, CT.   (Amanda at Kind Over Matter is doing 28 acts of kindness to include Adam and his mother.)  So rather than keep my head down and go about my day-to-day life, I decided to incorporate some sort of kindness into every day from now on.  Why stop at 26? (I hope I do this anyway, but it will become more conscious now.)

imagine if

I certainly didn’t want or need to talk to my daughter about my fears surrounding recent events, but I did want to involve her in these acts of kindness.  I asked her what she’d like to do and I’m pretty sure it was her idea to hand out flowers to people at the zoo.  So we did!

flowers

Inspired by Amanda’s kind bombs, we used her flower template idea to make flower tags to add to the stems and we handed them out to people.  I LOVED her post about doing the acts of kindness… and she has lots of good ideas.  We also made a set of flowers to use with a small piece of candy for placing on 26 car windshields.  More to come on that project.

We loaded up our stroller and set out to spread cheer.  It was so so fun… I don’t know who enjoyed it more – the recipients or us.  My daughter is definitely hooked.

Perspective and a blogging break

I’m going to take a blogging break for the remainder of the year.  I know, that’s just four posts! I hope you all enjoy the end of year festivities and I wish you all the best in the new year.  See you on Jan 1, when I’ll reflect on my One Little Word for 2012 (mindful) and reveal my choice for 2013.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments and for all you have added to my life!
