Alaska excursions: White Pass Scenic Railway

me on cabooseRemember how I went to Alaska this past summer? I was pretty diligent with editing the hundreds of pictures I took, but somehow I stopped before I was done.  Today I’d like to share with you a few photos of White Pass Scenic Railway, designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.  On Friday, I’ll show you the pod of orca we were so blessed to encounter.

On one of our excursions, we took an unforgettable journey aboard the “Scenic Railway of the World” to the White Pass summit.  Think of the courage and brave acts of those who worked on the railway in order to travel into the mountains to seek gold.  Carved through some of the North’s most rugged terrain in 1898, the route climbs from sea level in Skagway to nearly 3000 feet in just 20 miles (it’s 110 miles of track), offering spectacular views, as you’ll see. There are tight curves, steep grades, and sheer drops that astounded me.  Much of the construction took place in the dead of winter with temps as low as 60 below.

100,000 men and women headed north for gold, but only 30,000 or so actually reached the Klondike gold fields.  Between July and November of 1898, the US Mints in Seattle and San Francisco received ten million dollars worth of Klondike Gold.  By 1900, another 38 million dollars had been recorded – the largest gold rush the world has ever known.

These photos will show you how treacherous that journey must have been.  All aboard!

The gentle innocence of children

little feet rainbowI have heard it said that children are our most effective teachers, and I thought I understood what that meant… that they remind us to be curious and present and teach us patience.

But there’s more to it.  Children do not yet know much of the history and muddle of the earth and it’s people.  They can’t fathom hatred and wars, political injustices, inequality.  They don’t understand manners and courtesies and little white lies.  They are a gift of innocence, ours to open and be refreshed.

The most magical sound to my ears is my daughter’s laughter.  When I hear it, especially the kind of hearty laughter where she just can’t stop, I think I know what pure joy is.  I am stopped from whatever I am thinking and I only feel deep happiness.  That she utterly abandons everything else but what she finds hilarious makes me marvel too.  How far I have wandered from that purity!

Talking with her, snuggling with her, racing in the park, or putting her to bed at night… I treasure these experiences more now than ever before.  I used to be annoyed, impatient, wanting to be elsewhere.  But now I see the love that she is and I want to be near it.  I want to tell her often how much I love her.  I want to encourage her creativity and wonder and then follow along.

A love letter to you

butterfly loveOn this Valentine’s Day, really just like on any other day, I want you to know how much I love you.  This day celebrates the reason we are all here… to love each other and ourselves (and the chocolate only helps matters, right?).

Every human being has a need to feel cherished, precious, valued, and needed.  Well, let me thank you for being who you are and being in my life.  I hope you will spread the love to your family, your friends, and anyone you meet today… and every day.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

Awakening to wholeness: Live True magazine debut

“Each moment of every day, we have a choice to
awaken. Each moment of every day offers an
invitation to come fully alive.” ~ Becky Lyter McCleery

I have been hiding my talents and dreams for years and years.  I have been sleepwalking through my life, letting people and events determine what kind of day I have or even what happens next.  Slowly but oh so fully, I am waking up.

I can finally see that there is a path I am meant to take, someone I am meant to become. I know that I am made from divine love and I am here only to love.

In this awesome process of waking up to living wholeheartedly and authentically, I’ve found some new websites and blogs, one of which is Raising Loveliness by Becky Lyter McCleery.  There is something about the peacefulness of Becky that drew me in right away.  She is a fellow wonder-seeker, introvert, idealist, and mother.

Live True magazine cover

I am delighted to have a piece of my artwork on the debut cover of Live True magazine, Becky’s new project, which is deliciously full of articles and artwork about awakening and wholeness.  It is a free inspirational magazine for women that will be published 6 times a year.  Sign up here to receive it in your inbox.

“I believe that you are here for a reason, you have
gifts that are yours alone to share, and our world
needs you (the true you, exactly as you are), right
now.

Here’s to living our truth and awakening to the
wonder within ourselves and throughout our lives!”

Soulful home: a warm welcome (February prompt)

Home collaged lettersSo far I think we’re off to a great start! I was so thrilled with how many of you undertook January’s clutter challenge! How did you do? If you’re just joining us, catch up here.

Kathryn Robyn and Dawn Ritchie, authors of the book The Emotional House: How Redesigning Your Home Can Change Your Life, believe that every room in your home has both a practical function and an emotional function.  Understanding this is the first step to creating a home that fits your personality and lifestyle.  For example, the kitchen is for nourishment/nurturing; the bedroom is for rest/calm.

This month we are going to address that area we find just as we enter our homes.  (I’m referring to the place where you would greet guests or answer the doorbell.) The entryway/foyer is meant to create a welcoming feeling, helping us and our guests to feel comfortable, to relax and to be themselves.  Your entrance is the first sight that visitors have of the personality of your home, so incorporate some mementos or objects that reflect who you are. Warm colors in your decor and accessories give instant coziness.

An entryway should obviously invite entry.  That means an obstacle-free path from the door with enough room for people to remove their coats and purses and hang them up.  And it’s a transitional space, something for people to move through as they come further into your space.  So as you make changes, think how you’d like your guests to feel when they enter your home.

Here are a few articles to help inspire you:

Here’s a “before” and “after” view of our entryway:

entryway before and after

I decided to add a rug to define the space, incorporating the colors in our living room and that I’ve been drawn to lately.  I added the picture frames to the wall (on sale at Aaron Brothers last month) and painted red the ones that were white.  I bought and painted the bird coat rack, and also painted a grey paper lamp cover that I really didn’t like since it was dull.

I’m pleased with the outcome.  It’s a lot more inviting now.  I would still like to add a little chair, perhaps something like this one I saw in a magazine.chairs

Just like last month, please let us all know in the comments what you’re up to this month! As you can see from my redo, it doesn’t have to be anything major.  Have fun with it.  🙂
