In WAY over my head (the e-courses I’m taking)

current e-coursesI figure that I’m bound to get a good chuckle or a knowing “me too” out of this problem I seem to have developed.  It’s just that there are so many amazing e-courses out there and for every five I force myself to pass on, there’s another one calling to me.

Somehow it all seems to balance out.  Where some are intensive, others are only one prompt a month.  Still, I’ve vowed to myself in the name of sanity and stillness and needing time for other projects that when these end, I won’t take more than one at a time.  You believe me, right?

Anyway, here’s a little blurb about each course:

OneLittleWord2014One Little Word 2014 with Ali Edwards is about selecting one word to be your focus for the entire year.  This is the third year I’ve done this (mindful, stillness, and now cherish) and I can honestly say that it makes a big impact in my daily life.  My word, and Ali’s monthly prompts, helps me make better choices.  On the first of each month, Ali sends us something to reflect upon and assigns us a creative project.  I used to have a small blog hop group to share my posts with, and now we have a Facebook group with over 2300 members.  You can read all my OLW posts here.  (And I have to mention that this one doesn’t count toward my one-at-a-time-going-forward nonsense.)

Proj Light Year Liv Lane

Project Light Year with Liv Lane: a soulful journey to your brightest year yet.  This year-long class is about deepening your relationship with the universe, bonding with a community of like-minded women, and stepping into your own light.   Each month Liv sends five days of e-mails diving into the theme of the month, leaving the rest of the month to experiment with the concepts and integrate them into our lives and discuss them in our private Facebook group.  The support, celebration, and reflection of this group is absolutely amazing.  Of course all the themes are interconnected.  We are really creating positive energy in the universe.  The only post I’ve written thus far about this class is this one: Unlimited Possibility: my vision board.

Soul Food: 26-week art workshop provides two art video-format lessons each week along with downloadable cooking recipes too. 36 artists present cool mixed media techniques, art dolls and other sewing projects, jewelry making, handmade journals, abstract art, portraits, sculpting, works on canvas and in journals.  There are giveaways and a Facebook group too where we share our work. Luckily we have access to all the lessons until the end of the year because I’ve only done about 3 of them.  Here’s one:

Art Society

Christy Tomlinson’s Monthly Art Video Club is another monthly club with one project on the 15th of the month.  I adore Christy and her informal teaching style.  This class is designed to bring to you new techniques, new projects, introduce you to new products and connect you with other like minded artists in (yes, you guessed it!) the Facebook group.  This club is designed to help you learn new techniques to strengthen your own art, to grow as an artist and also to have a broader spectrum of what mixed media is and can be! It helps me use up my stash of goodies too.

Written Anew

Written Anew: The Sacred Story of You with Becky McCleery is the one class on this list that’s over.  Lol.  This was a five-week journey within, “tapping into the sacred truth of who you are, awakening your inherent loveliness and choosing to step into the soul-nourishing life you’ve been longing for.   We looked at our childhoods to remember our greatest joys and strengths, looked at what might be weighing us down and preventing us to use our inherent strengths, and made a plan for moving forward and shining brightly.  Becky gave us weekly meditations, lessons, activities, challenges, a discovery journal, and yes, a Facebook group.  I will write more soon about this course.

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 9.42.06 AM.pngWrite Your Authentic About Page with Abby Kerr is about reaching your Right People effectively in your About Page.  Abby gave us many copywriting resources, reviewed each of our pages, and helped us structure our pages based on what type of business we have.  In short, an effective About page should sound like you, invite your Right People to do something (subscribe in my case), and give a sense of your personality and offerings.  Abby included 8 audio lessons with written transcripts, 3 screencasts where she critiques various About pages, plus a Q&A call and a bonus lesson about the Home page.  Check out my new About page!

The Sacred AloneThe Sacred Alone with Susannah Conway is a “gentle 14-day journey into the quiet knowing space in your heart that offers refuge, wisdom and calm.”  Each day consists of an email from Susannah with a short essay on the day’s theme, a downloadable 5-minute meditation or visualization in her lovely and quietly soothing voice, and a journal prompt. The goal is that by the end of our 14 days together I’ll have created my own Sacred Alone practice.  If you know Susannah, you’ll understand why I absolutely had to participate.  I’m mostly collecting the e-mails and meditations to read when I have time.

Living From Your SoulLiving From Your Soul with Neale Donald Walsh is the main thing I’ve been working on.  This intensive course has already (in week 2) given me the most amazing peace, sense of aliveness, and complete acceptance.  It is transforming my life.  It’s like being let in on a huge secret: the purpose of life and how to live in harmony without struggles.  It’s about living as your truest self, to be able to . . .

  • Accept yourself and your circumstances fully and feel “in harmony” no matter what you’re doing from moment to moment
  • Walk through your everyday life with a much deeper sense of your place on the planet and the meaning of your existence
  • Attain a more profound understanding of who you really are
  • Relax, knowing that life will always work out the way it should
  • Feel confident about speaking your Truth as you know it
  • Live with an attitude of contentment instead of struggle
  • Connect with your soul in such a way that your whole life will become a creative expression of your truest self

A continuation of The Gifts of Imperfection with Brene Brown – an art journaling course hosted by Oprah.  This part will be about cultivating creativity, play, stillness, meaningful work, and laughter.  Brene says, “I don’t want to just talk about wholeheartedness, I want to live it. Flow magazine: an ode to creativity and paper

IMG_8439-001IMG_8502I’ve got to tell you guys about this amazing magazine for paper lovers called flow.  It’s from Amsterdam and has been around for years, but only recently in an international edition.  It is also about positive psychology, imperfection, and life’s little pleasures… helping readers reflect on their happily busy lives.  In the Netherlands, they even publish a holiday edition, calendars and stationery, and even special issues on topics such as mindfulness.  I mean really, they may as well have named the magazine, “You hoo! This is for you, Naomi!”

Photo Friday: Seattle’s Chihuly Museum

Last summer after our cruise, my daughter and I spent a gorgeous day together in Seattle. We took the monorail from our hotel to the Seattle Center to see the Space Needle, the Chihuly Glass Museum and Garden, and then the Children’s Museum (highly recommend – pretty spectacular).  Here’s a little more about Dale Chihuly himself.

The Gifts of Imperfection: Brene’s ecourse

I read this beautiful post by Jodi Chapman titled “Do You Know?” (in which she writes that we are amazing and infinite and definitely already enough – do read it) and it reminded me that I haven’t told you about this course yet.

About three years ago, a friend invited me to a Houston PBS lecture on wholeheartedness.  That’s where I first heard of Brené Brown, enjoyed her down-to-earth manner and the lessons she imparted that evening, took copious notes, bought her book The Gifts of Imperfection, and subscribed to her blog.  I felt so proud that we had a gem like Brené here in Houston, a city that honestly I don’t like that much.

When Oprah had Brené on her show in September (twice!) and they announced a two-part art journaling e-course, I didn’t think twice about signing up.  (See previous post about my e-course addiction.) I am eagerly awaiting Part 2, which begins at the beginning of April, but in the meantime, let me share with you what Part 1 was like.

The overarching aim of the class (and her book) is to help you move from “What will people think?” to “I’m imperfect and I’m enough.”  Oprah and Brené give weekly guideposts and reading assignments, then Brené shares some art journal lessons that are simple and fun.

One of the lessons was to look at a photo of ourselves as a child, describe what we see, and then think about what qualities we still have and those we’ve lost along the way.  It’s a challenge to love ourselves as we would love a child, but we all have that inner child within us who deserves loving.

This is part of a self-care collage I made.   There’s a difference between healthy and unhealthy self-care.  Brené described it aptly as the difference between savoring one piece of quality chocolate and mindlessly eating an entire bag of M&Ms.  Ahem.

Are you an emotional eater? How to stop manipulating food

Friends, I’ve finally gotten to that place.  I want to take care of my body, love it unconditionally, and give it what it needs to best do its job.

Why do we reach for food when we are not hungry for food? We are craving something, looking for a connection that we can’t seem to find.  Something is missing and we are filling the gap with food (or alcohol, or gambling, or just fill in another obsession here).

I read two very powerful books in December that I’m still thinking about.  I may need to read them again a second time, which should tell you something because one of my mottos is, “so many books; so little time” and I just don’t do that!

Two booksI’ve written here about what an amazing book The Untethered Soul is, but I haven’t yet told you about Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything by Geneen Roth.  Interestingly, both books touch on our need to fill an inner emptiness with food.  Singer suggests seeing what happens when you don’t reach for food and you just sit with the feeling without stuffing it away:

“We are constantly trying to hold it all together.  If you really want to see why you do things, then don’t do them and see what happens… There’s a reason for everything we do.  If you want to see why you care so much about what you wear and what your hair is like, then just don’t do it one day.  Wake up in the morning and go somewhere disheveled with your hair a mess, and see what happens to the energies inside of you.  See what happens to you when you don’t do the things that make you comfortable.  What you’ll see is why you’re doing them… You are constantly trying to stay within your comfort zone.” from The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael A. Singer

Interesting, right? I read Women Food and God because Liv Lane recommended it, and because she mentioned that Oprah swears by it.  Since I trust both of them, and since I have been mindlessly munching a lot lately, I wanted to see what Roth had to say about emotional eating.  She is gentle as a guide in explaining how we turn to food when we don’t understand ourselves as well as we could.  We can learn to listen to our bodies and therefore stop manipulating food.

“The most challenging part of any system that addresses weight-related issues is that unless it also addresses the part of you that wants something you can’t name, … it won’t work… Being thin does not address the emptiness that has no shape or weight or name.”

Woah! This is good stuff, right? As much as I have been wanting to lose the pounds I’ve lately added, I didn’t have any idea what the real issue at hand actually was.  Since I have been eating up spiritual books as if they were chocolate, I’m finally coming around to an awakening.

“The bottom line, whether you weigh 340 pounds or 150 pounds, is that when you eat when you are not hungry, you are using food as a drug, trapping with boredom or illness or loss or grief or emptiness or loneliness or rejection.  Food is only the middleman, the means to an end.  Of altering your emotions.  Of making yourself numb.  Of creating a secondary problem when the original problem becomes too uncomfortable.” p. 52girl birdie

“Our work is not to change what you do, but to witness what you do with enough awareness, enough curiosity, enough tenderness that the lies and old decisions upon which the compulsion is based become apparent and fall away.  When you no longer believe that eating will save your life when you feel exhausted or overwhelmed or lonely, you will stop.  When you believe in yourself more than you believe in food, you will stop using food as if it were your only chance at not falling apart.” p. 80

For me, this turns any judgmental thought into one of compassion and love when I see someone who is overweight.  Turning that compassion toward myself was much harder though.  I knew I could do it if I chose to.  I just didn’t want to.  Then I read this:

“Freedom from obsession is not about something you do; it’s about knowing who you are.  It’s about recognizing what sustains you and what exhausts you.  What you love and what you think you love because you believe you can’t have it.” p. 163

“The writer Natalie Goldberg says that we are always practicing something and most of us practice suffering.  Why not practice ending your suffering instead of perpetuating it? Since you are eating anyway, moving around in your body anyway, being aware of something anyway, why not spend that time waking yourself up instead of deadening yourself? Is there anything better to do with a life?” p. 197

“Food has a direct effect on our appetite and willingness to inquire, to discern what is true, to do the work of returning ourselves to what we love.  Food — as matter turned to spirit — is the direct connection between the physical and the spiritual, between what we put in our mouths and what we feel in our hearts.  Passion, strength, joy cannot take root in exhausted, burdened, half-dead bodies.” p. 177

The similarity in the two books is that they both talk about observing the mind, quieting it, and finding a stillness there that is the real you.  “You begin to love that which is not caught up in the hysteria.  Love the stillness.  Love the spaciousness.  Love the peace… you were so caught up in your mind that you didn’t realize there was anything else there.” p. 112

I know that my life is one giant blessing and that I am living it for some divine purpose.  In order to best carry that out, whatever it may be, I need to be physically lighter.  I need to be able to run up and down a hill with my daughter, laughing all the way.  I need to stop the joint aches that I  know are caused by extra weight.  Bottom line, this simply is not the best I can be.  Now I see that.  And, like Geneen Roth writes, why wouldn’t I want what’s best for myself?

“Of this I am certain: something happens every time I stop fighting with the way things are… And it feels like relief.  It feels like infinite goodness.  Like a distillation of every sweet fragrance, every heart-stopping beauty, every haunting melody you’ve ever heard.  It feels like the essence of tenderness, compassion, joy, peace.  Like love itself.  And in the moment you feel it you recognize that you are it and that you’ve been here all along, waiting for your return.” p. 74

Yes.  My return.  Here is the true Naomi emerging once more.

I loved reading about how introversion is not currently valued by our society and how we became a country that values extroversion; how values such as character and integrity were overtaken by confidence and movie-star magnetism.; and how we’ve turned extraversion into a standard to which everyone must perform.

“Introversion, along with its cousins sensitivity, seriousness, and shyness, is now a second-class personality trait, somewhere between a disappointment and a pathology.

“As a child, you might have heard your parents apologize for your shyness… or at school, you might have been prodded to come ‘out of your shell,’ that noxious expression which fails to appreciate that some animals naturally carry shelter everywhere they go and that some humans are just the same.”

“Now that you’re an adult, you might still feel a pang of guilt when you decline a dinner invitation in favor of a good book.”

“I have seen firsthand how difficult it is for introverts to take stock of their own talents and how powerful it is when finally they do.”

“Our current society seems to place a premium on the aggressive person, ‘the go-getter.'”

Survival Lessons by Alice Hoffman

A quick and fun read about living life to the fullest.  Hoffman wrote this as a heartfelt guide to life because she went through a cancer diagnosis and treatment and could not find a book that helped her through it. It’s about what matters most.

From her introduction: “There is a very thin line that separates readers and writers.  You make a leap over that line when there’s a book you want to read and you can’t find it and you have to write it yourself.”

The Invention of Wings: A Novel by Sue Monk Kidd

What a passionate book this is! I was immersed right away and had several late nights with it.  It tells the story of pre-Civil War Charleston from the points of view of Sarah Grimke (who, with her sister, dedicates her life to the abolition of slavery and women’s rights) and Handful, a slave of the family.  Both women are trapped inside lives that can’t contain them.  The story is perfectly paced and I couldn’t put it down.  There were many passages I copied down because they were written so eloquently and poignantly. I cannot recommend this book enough for it’s personal way of telling it’s story and because it found its way into my heart.

Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography by Rob Lowe

This is the first book that I’ve listened to on CD since, well, since before there were CDs! I still call it “books on tape.” All I can say about this book is that it’s laugh-out-loud funny and very engaging.  Knowing how his life has turned out (thus far), I find it fun to listen to his early challenges and his humorous stories of making his first movie, “The Outsiders.”  His descriptions (and impersonations) of his fellow actors are spot-on.  Best, Rob Lowe is humble and easy to relate to.  He’s candid, relatable, and such a great writer.  I’m looking forward to his new book, Love Life, coming out in April.

Courageous Souls: Do We Plan Our Life Challenges Before Birth? by Robert Schwartz

Courageous Souls (now out of print but reissued under the new title, Your Soul’s Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born) explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives and our challenges before we are born for the purpose of spiritual growth.  We are eternal souls living in this physical body and using our time here to evolve.  When we realize that we planned our life’s challenges in order to evolve and grow, suffering is no longer without purpose.  We can find meaning, wisdom, and peace from every experience.

You can’t help but wonder… what on earth am I here to learn/do/be?

Conscious Community: A Guide to Inner Work by Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira

Rabbi Shapira was a Rebbe in Poland who buried this manuscript before he was taken by the Germans in the Holocaust.  This was found after the war and translated.  In it, Reb Kalonymus teaches the art of self-observation and running a spiritual community.  It consists of detailed guidance on Jewish mindfulness.  He writes eloquently about deepening the holiness within each of us.” Anytime we feel deeply, we are dealing with the soul.”

This is my second time reading this book.  I was prompted to pick it up because I’m learning about similar issues in class I’m taking and have been wondering what Judaism teaches about the soul.

Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue, Book 1 by Neale Donald Walsh

“This book addresses most, if not all, of the questions you have ever asked about life and love, purpose and function, people and relationships, good and evil guilt and sin, forgiveness and redemption, the path to God and the road to hell… everything.”

“In the moment of your total knowing (which moment could come upon you at anytime), you, too, will feel as I do always: totally  joyful, loving, accepting, blessing, and grateful.”

This is why I no longer get as worked up by other people and their crazy antics:

“Your potential is unlimited in all that you’ve chosen to do.  Do not assume that a soul which has incarnated in a body which you call limited has not reached its full potential, for you do not know what the soul was trying to do.  You do not understand its agenda… Therefore, bless every person and condition, and give thanks.  Thus you affirm the perfection of God’s creation, for nothing happens by accident in God’s world, and there is no such think as coincidence.  If a snowflake is utterly perfect in its design, do you not think the same could be said about something as magnificent as your life?”

This one too:

“Each soul is a Master — though some do not remember their origins or their heritages.  Yet each creates the situation and the circumstance for its own highest purpose and its own quickest remembering — in each moment called now.  Judge not, then, the karmic path walked by another.  Envy not success, nor pity failure, for you know not what is success or failure in the soul’s reckoning.  Call not a thing calamity, nor joyous event, until you decide, or witness, how it is used.  For is a death a calamity if it saves the lives of thousands? And is a life a joyous event if it has caused nothing but grief? Yet even this you should not judge…”

For me, this quote below is the answer to so so much:

“Begin by being still.  Quiet the outer world, so that the inner world might bring you sight.  This in-sight is what you seek, yet you cannot have it while you are so deeply concerned with your outer reality.”

“This is the goal of your soul.  This is its purpose–to fully realize itself while in the body; to become the embodiment of all that it really is.  This is My plan for you.  This is My ideal: that I should become realized through you.  That thus, concept is turned into experience, that I might know my Self experientially.”

“Your soul knows all there is to know all the time.  There’s nothing hidden to it, nothing unknown.  Yet knowing is not enough.  The soul seeks to experience.  You can know yourself to be generous, but unless you do something that displays generosity, you have nothing but a concept… It is your soul’s only desire to turn its grandest concept about itself into its greatest experience.  (Until then it is speculation, and God says he has been speculating about Himself for a long time.)”

“The more you are, the more you can become, and the more you can become, the more you can yet be.  The deepest secret is that life is not a process of discovery, but a process of creation.  You are not discovering yourself, but creating yourself anew.  Seek, therefore, not to find out Who You Are; seek to determine Who You Want to Be.”

And finally, this is so very interesting about petitionary prayers and our frame of mind:

“No prayer… goes unanswered.  Every prayer — every thought, every statement, every feeling — is creative.  To the degree that it is fervently held as truth, to that degree will it be made manifest in your experience.  When it is said that a prayer has not been answered, what has in actuality happened is that the most fervently held thought, word, or feeling has become operative.  Yet what you must know — and here is the secret — is that it is the thought behind the thought… that is controlling thought. If, therefore, you beg and supplicate, there seems a much smaller chance that you will experience what you think you are choosing, because the thought behind every supplication is that you do not have now what you wish.  That thought becomes your reality.” and “You will not have that for which you ask, nor can you have anything you want.  This is because your very request is a statement of lack, and your saying you want a thing only works to produce that precise experience — wanting — in your reality.

The correct prayer is therefore never a prayer of supplication, but a prayer of gratitude.  When you thank God in advance for that which you choose to experience in your reality, you, in effect, acknowledge that it is there… in effect.  Thankfulness is thus the most powerful statement to God; an affirmation that even before you ask, I have answered.  Therefore never supplicate.  Appreciate.”

I am also reading an entry a day in The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have by Mark Nepo.  My favorite passage from February was this one:

“I must somehow find a way to slow down the train that is me until what I pass by is again seeable, touchable, feel-able.  Otherwise, I will pass by everything but will have experienced and lived through nothing.”
