Incorporating mindfulness – June 1 OLW Bloghop

This post is part of the One Little Word Blog Hop where members of Ali Edwards’ OLW class share their monthly assignments or something about their word.  Each month, on the 1st of the month, I’ll participate and then give you a link to the next in line (see the full list of participants at the end of this post).

How on earth is it June already? Our assignment last month was to find some specific tactics or activities we could take toward making our word part of our lives.  I decided on three actual tasks and three mental concepts.

  • Organize a household binder of preschool forms, invitations and schedules, contact numbers, and frequently referenced documents. I also have a little zippered pocket for bills and one for coupons.  This has helped me tremendously! Not only are our kitchen surfaces mostly cleared off, which helps my peace of mind, but I know where everything is when I need it.  Love that!

    Household binder

  • Stretch a little each day.  I am doing this and it feels great.
  • Rest a little each day.  This is harder for me but when I find myself sitting, I remember to just stop doing three things at once and just BE.
  • When I feel overwhelmed, don’t think about it so much.  Seeing how things usually sort themselves out, why get bogged down in feelings of stress and pressure? I keep putting one foot in front of the other and soon enough all is ok.
  • Sort of in line with the previous concept, keep the perspective regarding my daughter that one day I will miss these days.  If I can see her behavior as fleeting, I can deal with it better.
  • Physically stop rushing, rushing, rushing.  I’ve been forgetting this one a lot and I tend to walk fast and try to accomplish multiple tasks at once.  When I remember to slow my pace, I am much more likely to fully be present in this moment.

Not directly part of this month’s mindfulness plan, my husband finally convinced me to change our diet and exercise life.  I’ve been sluggish about starting something so life-changing, even though I definitely need to be better about taking care of my health.  When I undertake something, there are no grey lines.  It’s all in or forget it.  So I’m all in, and I’m anticipating that I’ll soon be feeling better about my body and in my body.  I am definitely eating more mindfully and appreciating food as fuel for my activity.

I’m so glad to be part of this blog hop!  Some of the artwork these ladies do is just incredible! Now, hop along to the next OLW post.  She (and each thereafter) will send you on down the list from there until you’ve seen them all.  The rest of the participants are listed below.  I encourage you to visit every blog for more creative fun.

I’d like to thank the Academy…

While I am excited to receive this blogging award from my friend Brian, I must say that I’m even more excited that he received it from one of his readers.  Way to go, Brian! I highly recommend that you check out his blog, “I’ve Never Heard of You Either… an uncommon look at everyday things.” It’s full of sharp wit and excellent music suggestions.    I’ve mentioned him here before, but that was prior to him jumping out on a limb and beginning his awesome blog.

I definitely put my heart into that gratitude post from 6 months ago, but it’s worth repeating because you dear readers have grown in numbers since then.  THANK YOU for being part of this community and for reading and sharing here.  I am perpetually amazed that you 1) care about what I write and 2) want to see my photos.  I used to individually reach out to each new subscriber, and I wish I could do that now, but you read the blog and you know that I love you and that I’m not exactly sitting around twiddling my thumbs these days.

I did a quick Google search and it seems to be that the Liebster Blog award originated in Germany, “Liebster” meaning favorite or dearest, to showcase bloggers with fewer than 200 followers. Upon accepting the award, the recipient must then pass it on to five more blogs.

The requirements are:

1. Show gratitude to the blogger who nominated you and link back to them.

2. Post the award on your blog.

3. Nominate five other bloggers you would like to pass the award to, also with fewer than 200 followers.

4. Tell your readers ten random facts about you.

I love getting the opportunity to share some of my favorite blogs with you.  I just counted my Google Reader subscriptions and it came to 194, up by 66 since I last counted in December.  Holy moly! No wonder I am always 800+ posts behind.  (By the way, I use Flipboard on my iPhone to read posts on the go… check it out!) Maybe I’ll design a page here of my favorite blogs, if anyone’s interested.

A problem with these awards is that I end up finding MORE wonderful blogs to follow.  Oh well.  Check these out and then let’s all look forward to hearing which blogs they recommend.

In my Googling of this award, not one recipient I saw had a list of 10 random things about themselves, so I thought I’d compromise and make it 5 instead.

1.  I clearly remember the day in 4th grade that I first walked into school in glasses.  I was embarrassed but I could see! (I also was astounded to realize that carpet is made up of individual fibers, there were boats out at sea and that trees had leaves rather than being a big blob of green.)

2. I am proud of the fact that I took BC calculus my senior year of high school, but now I don’t know what the heck the purpose of that was or even what a derivative is.

3. I had a professor in college who was elegantly worldly in her demeanor and dress.  I started wearing several rings on my hands to be like her.  I couldn’t carry that off in the slightest.

4. I didn’t really come into my own until college.  I’m sure that’s a common thing, but at the time, I felt like the odd one growing up.

5. I took twirling lessons when I was 8 or 9 and even went to a competition.  I remember my dad taking me to class one time and we were getting fitted for our costumes.  The teacher said something about putting the sequins in a V on my (then non-existent) chest and I was so embarrassed my dad heard that.

My favorite photo

When the world around you is your canvas, you must have your tools with you all the time.  I always have a camera with me and I can’t say I’ve ever regretted it.  I keep my iPhone charging near my bed at night so theoretically I could even take pictures as soon as I open my eyes in the morning.  I LOVE  seeing pictures happening before my eyes… for that’s exactly what they are.  I also love going through them and smiling at the stories and memories they bring to mind.

And the idea that my best photograph hasn’t even been taken yet just spurs me onward.

Is this you too? Do you always have a camera with you? And are you as excited about the potential as I am? Do tell!

Photo Friday: Picture Black and White

I am already halfway through the two-month Picture Black & White class and am really enjoying it.  In looking beyond the color when taking a picture, I’m learning what graphic elements make up a strong image and how to arrange them, as well as how light brings things to life.  I have particularly loved the community-building in the class and want to remember some of the lovely compliments people have given me about some of my images, so I’ve included a few here.

Lining Up

  • Lots of lines and the shadows just add to it. Love that little bit of curve too.
  • oh those shadows. wonderful detail :-))
  • My eye was drawn to the curved line amongst all the straight ones. Then I saw the shadows. Very nice.
  • the shadows caught my eye right away too–it made me think of a sailboat!
  • I agree — the shadows show up so well in b&w! Love all the straight as well as the curved lines!
  • love your photo! the shadows and light are amazing and show up so well in b/w!

  • oh, i love your perspective! and the cute little tootsies poking out!
  • This is fabulous I really really love it.

Lining Up: My hand

  • Wow! This is amazing. I thought it was a leaf from the thumbnail and it would have taken me a long time to figure it out.
  • So creative. looks like a topographic map. Which, I guess, it is… 🙂
  • what a cool interpretation, love it!

  • oh wow, never thought of it before to capture this so close 🙂 magical

Lining Up

  • Fab! This wouldn’t have the impact in color.
  • I like the juxtaposition of the curves against the straight lines of the sidewalk and bricks.
  • it looked like a big potato masher on my phone! Love it!
  • I like the way the shadow gives it an abstract feel.

Seeing a Pattern: I thought this flower stem was pattern-ish.

  • Great pattern. Love the little dotted lines.
  • such an interesting capture. Love the light.
  • what a brilliant ‘eye’ you have to see the pattern in it. Very cool capture!
  • How delicate, love the white dotty lines.

Building Blocks: A Street in Italy

  • Very cool shot…love the perspective.
  • love these cobble stone street… this is wonderful in black and white.
  • Wow, you’d have to be careful walking down that street! Love your focus!
  • Gorgeous! I absolutely want to go in and explore!
  • Pic draws you in and up the steps.
  • A beautiful picture, love the way the staircase draws the eye into the frame.
  • Breath taking! So glad you converted this. Absolutely beautiful.
  • I remember walking that stairway and thinking how millions had done so before, you captured all that with just one photo.

White Out: Capturing your subject void of the darker tones of shadows and featuring mostly the light ethereal “keys” of white is often referred to as “high key” imagery.

  • This looks so feathery and soft! Beautiful.
  • very nice…i love all the wispy detail!
  • You did a great job! Definitely looks ethereal. Lovely!
  • Ooooh, this is just wonderful!
  • I love the softness of this shot! It is so pretty!

High End

  • Soo pretty! Love the flowers in the foreground and the darker bushes in the background. Nice.
  • I love this. It feels like it is super sunny outside. The dark tunnel draws the eye into the photo too.
  • I like the texture in this. I think this would look great in a more traditional black and white processing too.
  • Even in b&w it feels like a sunny, warm day. So neat.

Rim Light: As soon as I read the prompt, I thought of this snapdragon macro I took in February.

  • Very nice! Love all those little details! 🙂
  • perfect perfect perfect!!
  • This is amazing! Had no idea what it was, glad you told us! Great abstract, but oh the light and texture!
  • Naomi, this is so wonderful! That light! My snapdragons are just about gone. I am going to go out to look at them again. I haven’t seen this viewpoint.
  • Oh my word! This is surreal! I love the texture and the light. Beautiful!
  • Love all those points of light!

In Contrast: Found this from my archives and it practically screamed “pick me for this prompt!”

In Contrast

  • This is really beautiful. I wouldn’t have thought to use the water reflections as the light portion of a contrast picture. It’s brilliant!
  • Such a great capture of beautiful droplets!

My mindset = my child’s behavior

(I wrote this post a few weeks ago and unintentionally hit “publish,” so some of you have already read it.  My apologies! I am happy to report that things are much better now… three nights in a row of my daughter sleeping in her own room and some time for myself have really helped.)

We’ve had a bit of a babysitter crisis at our house the past month or two.  I know that I operate as a much more patient and loving mommy when I’ve had a couple hours every day to catch up on my e-mail, edit photos, and read a book or some blog posts for awhile.  I had become accustomed to having that time but all of a sudden I have gone without it. Our favorite babysitter has been super busy (and I hear about it every day… “how many days until Ms. C comes over?”) and my daughter just didn’t mesh with another one that we had been using frequently.  Add to that a busy and traveling hubby and the fact that my daughter has been sleeping with me (another story entirely!) and I’ve had very little time apart from her to refill my well of self-care and quiet.

We have been outside quite a bit in the backyard or the park, we’ve been at friends’ houses, or we’ve been playing “store” or “house” all the freakin’ time.  I’ve said quite often, “just give me a few minutes to sit… go play by yourself.” I asked her last night as we were falling asleep and she inched closer and closer to me, “Am I really so great that you need to be with me every second of the day?” I guess so.

Coincidentally, we have noticed some testing behavior lately… deliberate defiant behavior after being instructed to stop doing something.  Putting paint on the wall; rubbing lipstick on my pants… anything just to get some attention.

It is said that “what you resist persists.” So I am asking myself how I am contributing to this.  Is she reacting to something I am doing? Could I be more present in my interaction with her? The paint on the wall… she was asking me to paint with her and I was trying to do something else (after a morning of already not getting my attention due to having friends over).  The lipstick… she’d just spent time at the park playing with daddy with me mostly talking to a friend separate from her, even though she wanted to play with me; and more of the same.

When I find reserves of patience and energy and am focused on her, my daughter’s behavior is stellar.  She is sweet, generous, and cooperative.  This past month’s change in behavior is probably due to my exhaustion and my attempt to separate from her before she is ready.  She is asking for my attention and care and I am shifting away.  This behavior is how she expresses her need.

So the basic question: how can I get through this phase, take care of my need for time alone, AND give her what she needs? I am trying to surrender to her needs for now, while still protecting myself by getting sleep at night and maximizing the alone time I do have.  I have changed my mental script: rather than be a drudge, I tell myself that we are lucky to play together all day like we do.  I am going to stop believing that something needs to be fixed and just accept it and see what happens.  I am trying to stop focusing on when I can get a break and start focusing on simply being in the moment.

I have also been applying the advice of giving her my undivided attention for a half hour or so and then watching as she goes off to play alone, her tank full after just that short time.  I get to decide if I am going to be worn out or delighted and I will choose delighted.
