July 1 OLW blog hop: mid-year check-in

OLWbloghop_LOGO_zps1135306c

Hello friends! More than any other year (for me), this one is flying by at turbo speed.  It’s crazy! This month, Ali Edwards’ One Little Word class assignment was to check-in with ourselves and our progress.  What’s working and what’s not working? Remember that I selected stillness as my word for this year.

I’m doing better, mostly because of an online course I just completed, which guided me in slowing down every single day and tuning in to the majesty around me in nature and the love within me and in every one around me.  It was a beautiful thing.  It IS a beautiful thing.

What has surprised me most so far this year? My ability to relax, to forgive, and to love.  Not that I doubt myself, but I’ve stretched more than I thought I would to allow myself those capabilities.  When I try, I can lower into the now and experience it fully.  I have found it a perfect way to experience joy every single day.

What am I most proud of related to my word? Letting go of judgements.  Self-acceptance.  Whew… those are biggies!

Bird and ATC

Three things I’ve enjoyed about my word: 1) It allows me permission to leave things undone – another biggie; 2) It shifts my focus from minutia to a bigger perspective; and 3) It helps me take better care of myself.  (The sweet bird and nest photo above is from my friend Deborah.  Isn’t it sweet? Noticing and savoring moments like this are what it’s all about.)

Three challenges I’ve faced related to my word: 1) It’s still difficult for me to allow myself to rest, sleep, sit still, wander; 2) I haven’t been very good at simplifying anything; and 3) So many lessons relate to my daughter but I fight seeing them and using them as learning opportunities.

Three things I’d like to accomplish by the end of the year: 1) Implementing some form of physical care and renewal – maybe yoga; 2) Creating some reminder art to help me remember my word in every day life; and 3) Identifying some tasks that I can delegate or give up to make room for breathing space?

I hope to get to all of these blogs in the next few days to see what everyone is up to.  If you’re playing along, head over to visit Lisa next.  You can see other posts about my OLW project here.

Behind the Art and an offer for you

One of our Life Book lessons this month was called “Expressing the True You” with Mitsi B.  It was a chance to pour out emotion and, as Mitsi said, “be a bit slapdash and just play and experiment.” I decided to use one of my Salvation Army finds rather than watercolor paper this time.   I wanted to keep the vibrant background but be able to paint over it, so I put a thin coat of gesso down and worked on top of that.  I bought this painted wood panel for $1.99 folks.  (Apologies to the original artist.)

Original to gessoAfter the gesso dried, I covered it with images and words pretty randomly.

Then I sprayed some ink in various places to cover the white and added some words.

Sprays and words

The most fun part for me was adding vibrant paint colors to create a fun and bold background.  I also dripped alcohol inks because, well, why not?

Detail of paintInk drippingPaint and inkOK so now the hard part.  I started with an abstract person and filled in as I felt compelled to.  Just as I do sometimes (hello Gemini), she has two sides to her personality.  Whether joy-filled or pensive, remembering happy events or something sad from her past, she is still wholly present in her life, bold, and daring.face closeupgirl face detail

The canvas felt like it needed something to balance the girl, so I decided on an owl, which to me seems to be sort of a visionary creature, full of mystery and protection.  I like mixing up the eyes, as you can see, to keep it whimsical.

adding owlwise old owlThen I needed to figure out how to connect the two figures.  I don’t consider myself very good at drawing hands, but there you have it.

repainted owlI couldn’t do the abstract thing with the girl either.  She just had to have hair!

Final girl and owl_blogI really enjoyed the creative process here, figuring out what to add and where, how to make it better and gel together.  I poured a lot of feeling and thought into creating it.  BUT… I don’t really want to keep this one.  I thought I would ask you guys (without meaning to flatter myself in any way) if this piece speaks to you in some profound way and if you would like it as a gift from me.

I think everyone should be able to have art in their home that they love and identify with.  If this painting does that for you, please let me know and I would be happy to send it to you.

Hope your weekend is filled with sunshine and rest.  Can you believe Monday is already JULY!? Me neither.

Behind the Art: Journey House

Behind the Art with Christy TomlinsonI enjoyed Christy Tomlinson‘s Behind the Art workshop so much and I’m excited to share some of my canvases with you.  The class was chock full of videos about what supplies Christy uses and, even better, how she uses them in her art. She talked about markers and pens, stamps and rub ons, adhesives, paints, stencils, and so so so much more.  Over 5 weeks, Christy guided us in starting several canvases with different types of backgrounds.  You’ll see as I share more soon, but do check out the link above if you are in any way as in love with all these supply goodies as I am.

For this canvas, we divided it into grass and sky colors with a background of tissue paper and washi tapes.House background House background4

Then we added the house and fun details, finishing it off with rub ons and doodles.House bird detail2 House viewHouse roof detail House roof detail2House details House details2And here’s the final result:House finalThis is my favorite canvas from the class and I put it in our living room so I can see it often and feel good looking at it.  🙂

Photo Friday: the people of Crescent City

NO_FrenchMarket3I snapped these first few just as the French Market was being set up for the day.  We mistakenly thought we could beat the sweltering heat if we took a walk very early in the day.  It is fun to watch the city wake up, but I still had to take another shower.

NO_FrenchMarket5This one below is my favorite.  This woman was transporting dresses for an African wares booth.  She looks very no nonsense, don’t you think?

Please check back here on Monday for some more New Orleans photos, this time of gorgeous homes, the trolley, beads, etc.

Have a fantabulous weekend, friends!

Behind the art: you & me

You and Me finalI made this little piece for my dear friend C’s birthday, which is today. I even got to give it to her in person when we were in Baltimore, a rare treat for me.

It is a small but thick piece of foam core board.  I covered it in papers that spoke “friendship” to me and rolled on paint in translucent colors I thought C would like.

Friends baseFriends_papers Friends_papers and paints

Then I drew the two girls, added text stickers, a bit of texture, and finished it off with some rub ons and doodling.
