Calm Mama… taking a mental break

Do you struggle to keep up with your thoughts and running mental to-do list? Well, I do! Once I finally get a minute to relax from household and mommy duties, my mind races. I’d like to share my latest secret: there is a way to tame this fast-paced, high-stress level, full-speed-ahead way of thinking… tap into your right-brain and SLOW DOWN.

I have been trying to live my pre-mom life for over three years now.  Lol.  I usually have so much I want/need to accomplish in any given day and I rarely let myself have some stillness.  I am needing some slow nourishment.

You can use short mindless and fun creativity sessions to create more calm in your daily life.  After ten minutes of doodling, I find I am energized, rejuvenated and uplifted.  Once you start balancing your thoughts this way on a regular basis, you’ll start to feel much more connected to YOU.

It’s so important to take small creative breaks.  I never realized it before taking Renee Yemma’s Calm Mama e-course, a 6-week e-mail course filled with self-care tips and inspiration about reconnecting with yourself through creative activities like doodling and painting.

Let me remind you about left-brain and right-brain thoughts.  Most of us live in a very left-brain dominated world, full of logical thoughts, critical close-mindedness, worries, and judgements.  On the other hand, right-brain attributes are “creative, visual, intuitive, inventive, open-minded.”  Scientists have found that the left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for any routine knowledge (like language we speak everyday) and the right-brain is responsible for NEW knowledge (like learning a new language).  It shouldn’t surprise you, then, that the right brain is very dominant in children as they process new information daily.  As we grow and get into our routines, we become left-brain dominant.

And the more we use and exercise our left-brains, the more unbalanced we get.  The trouble is… as adults, we are constantly thinking about what we need to do next.  When I’m playing with my daughter, I am rarely just playing with her.  I’m usually thinking about next steps, making dinner, what I need to work on next, etc.  So the Calm Mama course was perfect for me because it didn’t require me to do anything major.  I spent 10 minutes with a piece of paper and some crayons and called it an accomplished task.  I even did it with my daughter some days and we had fun with it.

I started remembering things I used to love doing like dancing to music around the house.  I started reconnecting with fun art techniques.  I started walking around with my iPhone camera on just to “capture inspiration and gratitude.” I have even started letting myself sit still and do nothing! Well, ok, I did that exactly twice but it’s a start!

I just loved playing with color for the sake of feeling the paintbrush glide across the paper  or just noticing which colors I’m drawn to.  I highly recommend playing this way, without any rules.  Find activities that light you up from within.  Maybe there’s something you used to do that you could tap into again?

Perfect right where you are – Sept 1 OLW blog hop

This post is part of the One Little Word Blog Hop where members of Ali Edwards’ OLW class share their monthly assignments or something about their word.  Each month, on the 1st of the month, I’ll participate and then give you a link to the next in line (see the full list of participants at the end of this post).

This month, our One Little Word assignment was simple.  Take a photo of myself and add some words.  We are allowing ourselves to take a breath.  It’s perfect really… I have been hurling myself ahead so quickly these days past few years and I am soooo ready for a respite.  Now that my daughter is in preschool for longer than five minutes a day, I can have some “me time.” (Enter singing angels here.)

Right here Right now

I chose this picture that I took with my iPhone of me with my daughter because I was mindful of her youth and her creativity… just being in the moment and enjoying her closeness.

Ali says, “We spend a lot of time getting down on ourselves for whatever it is we haven’t done, haven’t kept up with, etc.  This month I’m inviting you to let go of that – at least for a day – and accept yourself for where you are and all that you’ve done and all that you are.” How lovely is that? I don’t really do it very well, but I can try!

I’m so glad to be part of this blog hop!  Some of the artwork these ladies do is just incredible! Now, hop along to visit Carolina for the next OLW post.  She (and each thereafter) will send you on down the list from there until you’ve seen them all.  The rest of the participants are listed below.  I encourage you to visit every blog for more creative fun.

You can read other posts related to my OLW here.   I look forward to visiting again with you on Wednesday.  Enjoy your weekend!

Soul Restoration Truth cards

Part of Soul Restoration is making Truth Cards, reminders of the weekly sessions to carry forward.  As I process through the lessons, fears or negativity can come up, and I can use the pages and pages of Truths that Melody provides to select individual messages that are meaningful to me against those fears.  Chances are, when I’m feeling down or having a rough day, I’ll need even more reminders of these Truths to counteract the negativity.  At the end of the class and beyond, I will end up with a stack of these personal Truth Cards.  I should then use my cards to remember the truths about any given situation.  Truths speak about our strengths, not our weaknesses.

Reading through the statements and finding the ones that speak to me has been really meaningful.  I can read through dozens of Truths without feeling much of anything at all, but when a real zinger comes up, I feel it… some kind of emotion really resonates within.  The cards below are about taking care of myself and about the relief that “there’s a plan” for me.  Thank goodness there’s a plan!

I would love it if you’d read my Monday and Wednesday posts about this awesome class.

Come back tomorrow for the One Little Word bloghop! (It’s September already?)

More Soul Restoration artwork

Before we begin, let me give you all a warm bloggy hug for your encouraging comments on Monday’s post.  You are the best! Here are some more Soul Restoration-inspired creations:

strong and weak

These two pages are about how each of us has a strong self and a weak self, two parts of us that emerge at different times, but most importantly, it’s how we talk to our weak self that matters most.  Those bad habits may never go away… I need to learn how to wrap my arms around the negative qualities of myself and guide myself toward being better… compassionately and gently.  Everybody messes up; so you learn from it and start over without judgement.

Interestingly, coming up with the negative labels of myself (for the bird on the right) was far easier for me than thinking of positive attributes of myself! These days, though, I’d say I’m my strong self (the bird on the left) at least 85% of the time.  When I do feel overwhelmed, I hope I’ll remember to be kind to myself, just as I would to a dear friend.  (And that label “lazy”… hmm.  I’m not sure where that one came from, but perhaps it’s a clue to why I never sit still?)

Brave Girls Club

The pages above are about overcoming obstacles, mostly self-created, and going forward anyway.

We are also keeping a class journal.  Mine consists of notes from Melody’s weekly video lessons, thoughts, and pictures.  This page below is made up all the leftover “she… anyway”  lines that spoke to me.

Brave Girls Soul Restoration

I blurred some of the above pages but you get the idea.  Sometimes it’s just fun to doodle and play!

See the miracles

Please join me on Friday when I’ll share some of the Truth cards I’ve had fun creating over the past few weeks and again on Saturday for the monthly One Little Word bloghop.  (How is it going to be September already?!)

Restoration and soul crafting

soul restoration brave girls clubThis week I’ll be sharing some of my artwork from this online workshop.  Soul Restoration 1‘s last session of 2012 has begun!! This is the powerful 8-week online workshop that has literally changed thousands of women’s lives around the world.  I’m going against Melody’s advice NOT to share my artwork from the class because 1) registration is still open until September 7 so maybe you would like to sign up too and 2) perhaps something you see here will inspire you or motivate you to move in the direction of positive change for yourself.  (Deep breath here… because this is really close to my heart, I am shoring up for any negativity or criticism, not that any of you have ever been at all critical of me.  I’m sure that’s why Melody says not to share such deeply personal work.)

So today, a bit about the class and some photos of the book I’m crafting for the class. Wednesday, more of the same because there’s way too much material for one post, plus some pictures from my class journal.  Friday, photos of a few of my Truth Cards, which are simple pictorial summaries of key lessons that I can pull out anytime I’m needing a reminder of what I’ve learned.

OK so where to begin? I should explain first that while many of the women in the workshop are working through some really tough issues like divorce, abuse, financial woes, low self-esteem, and so on, I am using the class as an opportunity to carve out some time for myself, to think about what big goals I have for my photography/creative self going forward, and to remember all the things that I am good at and bring me joy… all while learning some new craft techniques.  Even though I am not feeling “broken” (been there, done that, thank you very much), I hope to find more of a clarity of my unique purpose and also take better care of myself.

Closed for restoration

The curriculum is not designed to CHANGE anyone, but to help RESTORE us to who we always have been and who we are meant to become.  Above is the cover of my book.  Thinking of my soul as a house, I designed it to be full of belonging and loveliness.  “The real me is still in there” means that I need to push away some of what has been piled onto the walls and floors of my house (negativity, other people’s comments, false expectations, bad experiences, etc.) and find the original structure.  “I am letting go” of such high standards for myself and others and allowing myself time to rest.

“Closed for restoration” to me means surrendering all my expectations and busy-ness and stopping to focus within.  This coincides beautifully with the month of Elul, our time of introspection before the High Holidays.  During Elul we focus on returning… one aspect of which is returning to who we are meant to be.

In the two-page spread above, I selected some Truths that spoke to me the most from pages of them that Melody gives us weekly.  The ones in the sky are general guidance for me:

“The right people and situations will always show up as soon as it is time.”

“You will do tremendous things – things that no one else could ever do – because there is no one in the world who is exactly like you.”

The Truths coming from the sun are directional/guiding:

“You are becoming who you were always meant to become, dear girl.”

“You are not alone… you have never been alone and you never will be.  Accept the love that is meant just for you.”

“You were never meant to fit in.  You were meant to stand out as a light in the darkness.”

“You make an enormous difference; the world would not be as luminous and beautiful without you here.”

Perhaps most important of all, the Truths laying on the grass are soft reminders to let go:

“You must start taking time to nurture yourself, my sweet friend.  No one else is going to do it, and the world needs the very best of you.”

“Be gentle with yourself.”

This next two-page spread is about my “Truthteller.” I think of her as “that still, small voice inside,” maybe it’s God or maybe it’s intuition or maybe it’s somehow connected to something larger than any of us.  It’s that core knowing that is always right.  The Truthteller has all the answers for me and my job is to tune in and hear how she is guiding me.  Thus far, I haven’t been very good at being still enough to listen.  🙂 When I have, it has only led to good things.

“The Brave Girls Club is a worldwide community of women who want to live the best, happiest, most productive and fabulously brave life they can possibly live…and that means something different to every single one of us.  It is an online community, a portal for amazing connections, a news source for everyday heroes, a resource for great ideas, amazing endeavors, everyday problem solving, realistic recipes and unforgettable get-togethers.”

Soul Restoration is one of the Brave Girls online workshops, developed and taught by Melody Ross, and is full of fun craft projects designed to “restore” you to your full self.  “It’s designed to help you really really think and hear your own soul again…to help you remember what brings you the most joy, to realize & remember all of the things that you are good at and that make your heart sing…to get back on track and to unleash the courage and motivation to stay on track….to reunite with your soul.”

Even if you aren’t interested in the class, I encourage you to sign up for their free e-mailed “daily truths.” (They also have a separate one for girls and teens.) P.S. None of these are affiliate links… I simply believe in this.

Come back Wednesday and Friday for more!  🙂

Photo Friday: a walk in the clouds

It’s hard for me to refrain from snapping a lot of cloud pictures on a regular basis.  I am continually seeing something beautiful when driving down the street or on a walk.  But when I’m on an airplane, forget about it… once I see a cloud castle or a little peek-through of grey clouds into bright blueness, I’m hopeless.  My hard drive is full of cloud photos from July and August.  Hope you enjoy.  🙂

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” Marcus Aurelius

‘You owe me.’  Look what happens with a love like that.
It lights up the whole sky.” ~ Hafiz

“I do it for the joy it brings, cause I’m a joyful girl. ‘Cause the world owes us nothing, we owe each other the world.” ~ Ani Defranco (Joyful Girl)

“May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.”  ~ Edward Abbey
