Now You self-portraiture wrap-up

Butterfly on shoulder

I didn’t take this one of myself but I love it all the same. It’s rare to have a nice picture of myself.

The six-week class, Now You, has ended (see earlier post here) and what an amazing journey it was.  Kristin and Meredith were excellent and encouraging guides into our foray of self-examination and critical eyes.  The women in the class formed a strong community immediately, resonating with each other’s words and hesitations and our limited ideas about what beauty consists of.

Beginning the class, I was open to the idea of doing the work, finding me in the frame no matter how hard it was.  What I was not anticipating was how everyone else would be willing to share their internal journey via our Flickr discussion group.  I am honored to be part of such a tender, courageous, and humble group of extraordinary women, facing their fears and baring their beautiful souls and stories.

Being part of this group has been inspiring.  Kristin and Meredith’s encouragement and generosity were inspirational.  I am so glad I took this journey.  (If you’re interested, a new class is beginning toward the end of August.)

Here are some images you’ve seen before as well as some new ones.  I encourage you to find yourself in the frame every once in a while, just to prove you were there too.  It’s surprisingly healing and really feels like you’re giving yourself a gift.  Do it for your kids if not for yourself so they will know who you once were.

The eyes have it

The eyes are the windows to the soul… my daughter and me looking straight into the lens.

Photo Friday: craft goodies

TGIF, peeps. This coming Wednesday brings my daughter’s first day of preschool for the year and I am really looking forward to it!

She and I were wandering the school supply aisles at Target and I spotted these lovely art supplies. What class are these for??? The Oil Pastels were $6.47 ; the Water Colors were $8.09. Good, right?

Pentel paints and pastels from Target

I went to Joann Fabric a couple weeks ago to see what Stampington magazines they had on sale and I brought with me a printed coupon for 25% off my total purchase.

Joann Fabric craft magazines

It just so happened that the whole store was on sale! I got a little bin with all the tiny stamps in the top left here for about $5! On a trip to visit my husband’s family this past week, I had my first (and second) shopping experience at AC Moore.  Wowzers are we in the South missing out on some amazing brands and prices on scrapbooking supplies.  The small unmounted stamp on the top right… 45 cents.  The mounted stamps on the middle right…50 cents each.  And those cute little letter bundles on the bottom right? 80 cents each.  I KNOW!!!

Clear and mounted stamps

I have no idea how they can offer such crazy good prices.  Each of these packages of stickers below were only $1.22.

K and Company stickers

I’ve wanted to do some cards and collages with ribbon for a while now.  The stack on the left below is from Joann’s and I got all 10 spools for about $3.  The tower on the right is from AC Moore and all of that was about $10.

This cute little box was on sale for $4.

Storage box

I found these Zig pens and Faber Castel markers in the clearance bins outside AC Moore for $1 each.

Zig and silver and gold markers

And AC Moore had huge sales on paper…

K and Company paper

I ordered these cute little buttons from Eve.  She also has tags, art journal kits, stamp sets, and vintage papers.  Definitely check out her site for tutorials too.

AND, I got some great deals at a 1/2 Price Books here on some lovely books about stamping and about collage.  I’m afraid this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as all my new craft goodies go.   I finally got to spread everything out yesterday and just stare at it all before organizing and putting it away.  🙂 I can hardly wait to share with you some of what I’ve been creating!

Now tell me… are you as giddy about all this as I am? Want more? See these posts:

Get ready to shine online

I posted in May here about how wonderful I found Liv and her class to be, but I feel I must tell you again because she just announced that she’s launching a self-paced edition, providing participants with full access to all the content so they can go at their own speed.

I enjoyed taking the full version and being part of a community learning the content together.  But, Liv says she’s not offering it again this year and still deciding about 2013, so doing it at your own pace is the best way to go.  You can take as long as you need and can revisit the content as often as you wish.  And, you get access to the private Facebook group too! As she writes on her blog, BBTL consists of:

  • How to define the purpose of your blog and why this work matters {this is heart-thumping work – many folks are blown away by these exercises!}
  • How to attract the best readers you can imagine {and keep them coming back for more!}
  • Exclusive insights, tips and enlightening stories shared by super successful bloggers {see all 20 superstar contributors!}
  • How to write authentic, creative, compelling posts and never run out of ideas
  • How to make sure your blog’s design reflects YOU {or your business}, including easy + awesome design tips and resources
  • How to determine the best name and domain for your blog {many past students have changed their online identities based on these lessons!}
  • How to decide where your blog should live {from domain services to self-hosting to blogging platforms – all are not created equal!}
  • How to promote your blog authentically {without feeling like a slimy salesperson!}
  • How to use social media to attract your ideal readers – including tutorials on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest
  • How to prosper from your blog in ways that feel right for you with in-depth details on affiliate marketing, sponsorships, giveaways + more {I make thousands from my blog each year and you can, too!}
  • How to realize your blog’s business-boosting potential {awesome for entrepreneurs + small businesses}
  • How to find your tribe – building a super-cool, like-minded community of readers and fellow bloggers you can lean on for support
  • How to learn from my mistakes {I made a bunch of ‘em early on and don’t want you to do the same!}

There is such amazing content here.  If you decide this course is right for you, please sign up using my affiliate link and I receive a small monetary thanks from Liv for sending students her way.  If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer.

My two minutes of fame

My friend Stacie interviewed me for her Artist of the Month series on her blog.  It was so fun! I’d love to send you there to read it and look at Stacie’s jewelry designs and art.

Have you ever made a wordle? Here’s what it created when I put in my blog url.  I just adore it!

Photo Friday: 3 inspiring Chicago shops

There’s only so much sightseeing a girl can do, you know? When my sweet hubby noticed that I wasn’t a huge fan of trudging up and down Michigan Avenue, he asked what would be super fun for me.  I said let’s see what craft stores are around.  (I know, he is really a keeper!) Chicago has a Blick Studio!!! I was so excited I could hardly breathe.  I’ve ordered a few supplies online from them and couldn’t wait to see their store in person.  This was one of the highlights of my trip for sure.

Brushes and pastel sets and markers and papers and watercolors and row upon row of canvases in all sizes.  If I didn’t have to bring it all home in a suitcase I would have bought tons.  Just being around these creative tools made me giddy.  I got to ask the staff there tons of questions too.

I was in awe of their shelves of Golden products:

One morning I took the train to Wicker Park to have lunch with an old friend, but before we met, I wandered into a few shops in the area.  The first of my favorites was Myopic Books.

It’s hard to give you a sense of how jam-packed this used book store is.  Head to toe, around the corner and under and over… books absolutely everywhere.  One reason I loved it is that it reminds me of Shakespears & Co in  Paris.  It’s got character, local flavor, and that sense of making do.

I’ve saved the best for last.  Also in Wicker Park, The Boring Store is a FRONT! All I knew was that a website highly recommended the shop, so I entered and was charmed by all the  cute secret agent spy gear they had displayed rather humorously.

The lovely woman working there explained that all the proceeds from the store support what was hidden behind a one-way mirror: 826CHI, a non-profit writing and tutoring lab that brings free programming to local students.  IT IS AWESOME!

826CHI is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers to inspire their students to write.  They offer fee drop-in tutoring, field trips, and in-school programs, in addition to publishing and creative workshops.

Even better, this is one of EIGHT centers, part of 826National, established by Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari.  They’ve served over 29,000 students.  Just as this store is a spy front, their other stores are creative too: a time travel shoppe, a robot supply repair store, a superhero supply company.  I would love it if you’d click that link and check it out.  They do amazing work.

The kids write and publish books that are for sale in the store too.

They sell cute writing supplies too.  Little matchbook-like note pads that I had to cover in washi tape, of course.  Blank books, pens and pencils, even a mini-post office set with little stamps and letters.

OK, there you have it… your tour of some fun Chicago shops! In next week’s Photo Friday I have some fun artsy finds to share with you.  Here’s a tiny preview:

Have a great weekend, friends.
