Replaying some old favorites

I thought I’d share with you a few of my past posts that are getting a lot of traffic lately.

The first is timely, since Sukkot is this week.

Sukkot arts and crafts: toddler style.  You’ll find a few arts and crafts ideas and a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet”  One of my posts that gets viewed at least once every single day, which continues to baffle me, has photos of the lemon tree from our old house.  If you have any idea why this would be so popular, do let me know.

A day of mindfulness is one of my favorites, all about Karen Maezen Miller’s retreat.

And finally, part 1 and part 2 of Inspiration: women reading and writing, about… just that!

I hope you enjoyed this stroll down memory lane.  For more, see my soon-to-be-revamped page of favorite posts.

Celebrating with kindness – OLW October 1 blog hop

As part of my “mindful” planning back in May, I wrote that I would rest a little each day, try not to think so much, and stop rushing around.  Well, that is just hilarious! I wrote it but I didn’t try very hard to actually adhere to those goals.  They are each still relevant and worth the attempt, of course.

Our September task was to think about a battle either worth fighting or surrendering and  something to celebrate.  Well, I am focusing on the celebration part.  Since completing the Soul Restoration course last week, I am smiling more, am way more gentle with myself, and better able to keep things in perspective, embracing my talents and forgiving myself for any perceived weaknesses.

How am I celebrating? I am looking for ways to show myself kindness… smiling at myself in the mirror when I catch my eye, telling myself “all in good time” when I look at something I want to get done, making myself a cup of tea, letting compliments stay forefront of mind for a little longer before moving on to something else.  Nothing major, but these little things feel good.

During the month of October I will focus on physically slowing down; stopping the rush, rush, rush that is daily life; remembering to savor the moment.  What about you?

These are a few of my favorite things

As one aspect of Susannah Conway’s Unravelling e-course, we took a look at the little treasures that we surround ourselves with.  I took my camera and went on a tour of my home to see what inanimate objects I have assigned meaning or “emotional value” to.  It was kind of fun! I encourage you all to think about what your favorite things say about you.

favorite things

The story behind the first set of photos above: these lovely vases were an engagement gift from a dear, dear friend; this piece of artwork was given to me as a thank you by a friend who somehow knows exactly what I need to hear again and again; this watch was a birthday gift from my husband 7 or 8 years ago and I wear it every day.

I was surprised that most of my treasures are all so very sentimental.  There is very little that I love just because of what it is unto itself.  What amazed me in putting together these pictures of my favorite things was that they say a great deal about what and who I love and what’s important to me.  Treasured memories are the best and I want to be sure to appreciate them and create more of them.

Favorite things

This is a group of things I would grab if the house were aflame: family photo albums going back generations; my great-grandmother’s (who I am named after) rolling pin; Mr. T, my buddy who I got 25 years ago and the softest blanket on the planet (it was on my bed when I was 9 and I’ve loved it ever since).  I pin a small piece of it to the inside of my daughter’s shirt every morning before she goes off to preschool so she feels she is still with me; a tablecloth and set of napkins that my grandma cross-stitched for me as wedding gift.

I used to collect a lot of things… thimbles from travels, books, candles, etc., but mostly I don’t place value on ordinary things.  There isn’t anything in my closet that sparked me to want to take a photo.  I enjoyed this interesting article on Brain Pickings about “bridging the practical and the sentimental in a way that bespeaks our constant see-saw between rational and intuition.”

Favorite things

Here are a few items I love in and of themselves (but wouldn’t grab if the house were on fire).  These towels in my daughter’s bathroom are nothing special, but I just love them for some reason; I got these charms exactly one year ago on a girlfriends weekend.  Every day when I look at them above the light switch to my closet, I think of the friend I made one morning there and our special, impromptu connection, and I feel so good inside; some of my paper collection – I seem to be addicted to pretty paper; my shampoo and conditioner… silly to be a favorite thing, but I have finally found a product that understands my hair and doesn’t weigh it down!

I display some of the items I value, like photos from memorable trips or of family members, or books, or pretty things.

I am so glad to have this picture of me with my 5-day-old daughter.  Every day when I see it, I remember the feeling of tenderness I had then and all my hopes for the future for her; I have this picture in my bedroom near my bed because it makes me smile.  It was an impromptu outburst of song on my husband’s part, right before the ketubah ceremony of our wedding began.

Surprisingly, most of my treasures are hidden away.  I have boxes of cards and photos I should look through and enjoy.

Favorite things

A random assortment of childhood photos; this letter from an lovely elderly couple at our temple growing up who would always have mint gum on hand for the kids.  The letter made me feel so good because I was probably 9 or 10 and to get a typed letter like that was really something for a kid.  I have it framed; anything with my mom and dad’s handwriting on it.

Favorite things collage

My new iPhone – I really love it!; my grandmother’s pocket watch, which she wore on a chain around her neck; a beautiful wind chime; this little sign my dad gave me; the ceramic house that I painted one summer with my best friend.

Favorite things

A blanket my mom made with iron-on transfers from some of my childhood artwork; a gift from my best friend; a doll with handmade clothing given to me by a great aunt.  It originally came in a glass case, which my young self immediately (but completely accidentally and with great regret) broke.

Susannah asked us to create a collage that represents our interests and passions right now.  I took literally 10 minutes to do this, so it’s nothing profound, but I do notice that I am drawn to coziness and pretty, delicate things… and books… always books.

So what about you? Do you have a theme to your treasured possessions? What do you collect? How to you display the items you most value? Or do you tuck them away somewhere? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments… I love reading what you have to say.

Around here…

I thought perhaps you’d like to know what it feels like and looks like in this neck of the woods.  I am…

… recovering from my daughter’s week-long virus that kicked all our tushies;

… desperately wanting to be able to open the windows and let in some cool Fall air, but it’s just a bit too soon.  But I’m adding Fall events to the calendar and getting giddy about pumpkin patches, nature walks, and being outside again;

… writing a bio and answering some interview questions because my photography is going to be featured in the October 15 issue of Sprout! (and doing imaginary cartwheels over here in anticipation and excitement);

… trying desperately to catch up on my classes, specifically Unravelling (taking photos and journaling about favorite things, creating a collage, and connecting with the lovely souls in the Flikr discussion group) and Soul Restoration (today begins the last of the 8 weeks and I’m still working on my pages for week 7 (and a painting) and have still to  journal about the topic, make a promise book, and make more truth cards – crazy good revelations coming from this class work) (Really, it’s so fun to be me!!);

… introspecting (is that a word?) as this will be published on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, when we think about how we can become more of the person we want to be.  (I’ve been asking myself if I’ve improved since last year.);

… preparing to MC the wedding of my dear soul sista and her beloved in a couple weeks.  Yes, really.  You know that will be a future blog post! I am piecing together some words of welcome, words about love and marriage, my thoughts about the lovely couple, and a lighthearted but meaningful way to pronounce them screwed married.

… and reading the loveliest book (The Paper Garden: An Artist Begins Her Life’s Work at 72 by Molly Peacock).

That habit of always reaching for your phone

I’ve written here about mindfulness a bunch of times, but have I written about literally doing nothing? On Friday, I went to Target to sell back my iPhone 4 for the new iPhone 5 that I’d pre-ordered (yes really, and I got $158 for it, so the new phone was only $50!), and since there was a great deal of server traffic since tons of people were also doing the same thing (the guy kept getting timed out or bumped out of the AT&T system), there were literally three whole hours between the time I wiped my old phone and handed it over and the time I had the new one in my little hands.

I didn’t realize I’d formed this habit, but apparently when a little time frees up, I reach into my pocket to check my phone.  Just sitting there with no way to call someone (without borrowing a phone), no way to receive calls, no Google at my fingertips, no e-mail, no blog access, no games, no Flipboard to read other blogs… well, I just didn’t know what to do with myself! It could have been the ’80s! (Seriously, what did we do back then?)

I am so NOT the person who gets the latest gadget first.  I mean, this happened everywhere, but at my Target there were 15 pre-orders and mine was the only one that happened to come in.  The others have to wait 2-3 weeks! The irony was not lost on me.  I  wanted the new camera capabilities and the speed of the LTE processor (and yes, it’s awesome), but I could have waited.  So I’m guessing maybe I was in this situation to teach me the importance of slowing the heck down!

I was internally laughing at my inability to just sit.  To just be.  Instead, I was thinking of how much I could be getting done instead of sitting there, wondering if someone was trying to reach me but couldn’t, and mulling over whether it’s good or not-so-good to be this dependent on a little device.  (I think I would take it to a desert island and be content for quite a while… as long as I could somehow charge the thing.)

So tell me… are you this dependent on your phone or is it just me? Yeah, that’s a trick question because I’m pretty sure you are, but share anyway.
