All you need are books and tea

I always enjoy being part of Kat’s Photo-Heart Connection and visiting the other participants’ blogs.   I haven’t been setting up photo shots recently to play with so this stands out for me as the January photo that means the most to me.  These are my absolutely favorite books right now and tea… well that’s just lovely, isn’t it?

books and tea

Taking time and care to set this up just right helped me be aware of the light and the gentle sunshine in my backyard.  This photo invites me to sit a spell and unwind.  The top three books are motivating, accepting, and like curling up with a blanket to talk with a good friend.Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 5.00.57 PM

OLW blog hop: beginnings

OLWbloghop_LOGO_zps1135306c

Hello beginnings! I’m super excited to begin a second year with Ali Edwards’ One Little Word class.  I selected stillness as my word for this year.  I really wanted it to be stop, as in physically stopping myself when I recognize that I’m getting carried away with little tasks, but that didn’t seem as all-encompasing as stillness.  I want to continue my focus on being mindful, last year’s word, so stillness it is.

be still necklace

My necklace is from the fabulous Lisa Leonard.  She sent it with this awesome calendar she created.

OLW lisa leonard

The prompt this month was to establish 12 intentions (word phrases or connections) and then 12 actions related to those intentions.  We will be referring back to these cards each month.

OLW Jan

It was fun thinking of the different phrases with the word still in them like “still of the night” and “I’ve still got it.” I aim to use my word in two major ways.  First, to physically stop all the nervous flitting about I seem to do and second, to cultivate an inner calm; to quiet the heck down inside my head! Wish me luck, friends.  (BTW, the little calendar tickets I used are by 7 gypsies.)

Our first blog hop of the year has 26 participants! I hope to get to all of them in the next few days.  If you’re playing along, head over to visit Pam next.  Our full list is at the end of this post.  You can see other posts about my OLW project here.

In related news, our Life Book assignment this week is also about our word or our goals for the year.  We are making a game board as a visual of our personal journey into 2013. Interestingly, I started making it about stillness but it ended up being more about my art/creativity goals instead, which I’ve identified as learning and playing.  It’s not finished yet, but you can see the game board I made and the obstacles and encouragement along the way, as well as my goal cards and the little pocket they will stay in.  The cards (gessoed and painted Bicycle playing cards) have notes/writing on the other side.  The game piece (markers) represents me ready to begin new learning adventures this year.  The lesson: it is crucial that each of us makes time for what matters to us.

Week 2 kindness challenge: love books package

100 acts of kindness week 2The Week 2 challenge on Toddler Approved‘s month-long kindness project is to send a love books care package.  (They have a book giveaway too so check it out.)  Kim and Amanda of The Educators’ Spin On It: Parenting with Purpose are challenging us to perform an act of kindness that helps children learn to read and to love books!  This act can be as simple as giving a book to a friend, leaving a book,  or donating books.  They encourage you to take part in the International Book Giving Day on February 14.

This was an excellent opportunity to send some of our Valentine’s Day books that we have outgrown to a friend’s very young son who is going through treatment for a rare cancer right now.  I made a care package for him and his older brother that also included some fun toys… buzz whistles, pencils, wristbands, etc.

Of course, knowing little ones, they’ll probably think that the best part is the gift shred!

If you’d like to help find a cure for rare cancers, including all pediatric cancers, please visit Cycle For Survival and search for “A Wheel Cure,” my friend’s team.

Revealing my new create space

You already know that I’m addicted to craft supplies like paper and embellishments.  You’ve seen those posts (linked above) and so you probably won’t be surprised to know that I also love organizing (especially organizing craft goodies like paints and markers) just about anything… a junk drawer, a closet, a file cabinet.  I’ve been drooling over magazines like “Where Women Create” and the “Better Homes and Gardens” quarterly storage issue.  I have also been doing so much more art lately and so I wanted a better space in which to do it, but didn’t want to spend very much money. Here’s the end result:

office_overview

Let me take you on a little tour…

First I had to completely empty the room, no small feat.   That Expedit bookcase is full of books that I carried into our dining room so we could move it to a different wall.  We also have a pullout sofa for guests that is very heavy that we moved across the room.  Midway through the clearing process, my sweet hubby noticed what I was doing! I keep him on his toes every single day with my impulsiveness and unpredictability.  🙂

Here’s the desk area now.  I have a huge inspiraton board above the desk, all my embellishments and stamps within reach, and desktop shelves for the most-used supplies.  The hanging baskets and rod are from Ikea.  I could look at this picture for days… it makes me so happy!

office_desk area_v2

The colorful pens, paints, and markers are my favorite part.  The little drawer is for hard drives and a pad of paper for all my lists.

office_desk shelves

Heaven…

The desktop organizers and these 6 cubes below are from Michaels (on sale for half price).  They are incredibly well-built and simple to assemble.  Having them right below the windowsill, rather than the desk, really opens up the room a lot more.

office_michaels shelves

I like having bigger spaces to keep supplies too.

office_storage boxes

I designated spaces for current class paperwork so it’s easy to reach/file every day. I also made a binder for this blog with a list of all published posts (their category and tags, their date, etc.), future post ideas, etc.  My end goal is to go back through and interlink related posts and make a list of featured posts by category.  Someday.

office_classes

You can imagine that my daughter is very taken with the new space too, so she has her own cubby.

office_kids boxNext to that and on the wall behind the washi tape/ribbon hanger are narrow shelves for paint.

And finally, the bookshelf is way more functional now since supplies are within reach.

office_bookshelves

I have all my craft books and magazines at eye-level.

office_craft booksoffice_class bindersThe process was huge but it was so fun to handle all my supplies again and move them to useful spaces.  What do you think?

Week 1 kindness challenge: the environment

100 acts of kindness week 1The Week 1 challenge on Toddler Approved’s month-long kindness project is to be kind to our environment.  This ties in nicely with tomorrow’s holiday of Tu B’Shevat, which is sort of a Jewish Arbor Day.  A key principle of Tu B’Shevat is that we were given the earth to care for it and protect it (certainly not destroy it), we are in partnership with God in tending it.  We will be going to our Arboretum and Nature Center‘s Arbor Day celebration to plant pine seedlings, play, and listen to music.

So join in with us! Pick up litter, plant a tree, feed the birds.  Megan of Coffee Cups and Crayons gives two cute ideas for creating bird feeders with kids.  My daughter and I decided to try the cookie cutter bird feeders.

birds_mix it up

What a sticky mess! We mixed up the few ingredients (going heavy on the corn syrup) and  molded them into the cookie cutters that my daughter wanted to use.

I can’t emphasize enough that they need to dry overnight.  I was overly eager to take them out because I wanted to run this post on Wednesday and a couple crumbled in my hands.  I had to just wait.  When we hung them up, we were thrilled with how they turned out.

birds_collage

It was fun for my daughter to do a quick project from start to finish with me.  All that was left was to wait to catch some customers!

Relief… everything is going to be amazing

clouds w quote

This is a letter I got from Brave Girls Club about a month ago:

BraveReading it, what I most felt was relief. I have been questioning my wants and doubting myself and my abilities so much lately in this on again/off again pursuit of… something. I compare myself to those who have already “succeeded” in creating their online personas and cultivated a large following. Whether it’s in their own art, their poetry, their photography, or in their own niche, I am envious. There, I said it.

I often feel that I’m spinning my wheels… directionless.  But then I saw this from one of Christine Mason Miller’s blogs, “Ordinary Moments,” and there was another deep exhale from within.

There is enough

My treasured weekday mornings alone fly by in what seems like half a heartbeat and I try to cram as many projects and tasks in as possible.  It’s not a relaxing feeling at all… more like being under the gun to keep crossing items off that ever-lengthening list.  So changing my perspective toward the knowledge that there will be time enough for it all reassures me immensely!

And finally, there’s that idea that everything up to this moment has led me to exactly where I most need to be right now.  It’s all a necessary learning experience.  If I am true to myself and can trust the unfolding, I can let go of the worry.

Such a relief! Everything is going to be amazing.

Please share what worries or thoughts you’ve been able to let go of with a little shift in perspective.  I’m very interested.
