Picture Inspiration: Weeks 7 and 23

Picture Inspiration: 52 Weeks of Photocentric Creativity and Community

Week 7: The Shape of Surprise

This time, it isn’t the object itself; it’s the sole reflection that you’ll study.  Toy with the many ways you can shoot a reflected object without the object to dictate it.  Do you remove the context alltogether for added mystery? Do you try for an unexpedted angle or perspective? Do you intensify it by making it black and white? Capture a shape in a way that makes your creative spirit take notice.

I’ve been looking at reflections everywhere lately and this is the most compelling one to me.

Week 23: Organic Lines

When we talk about lines within photographic images, we usually think about architecture, precise shapes, grids, and other logically linear elements.  Oddly enough, so many of our images don’t cocntain any of these things and yet there are still graphic elements present in so much of our photographic work.  This week, pay attention to the graphics of nature.  Look for organic lines and curves of the natural world.  Seek out the linear in the things that feel not-so-linear and see what kinds of graphic beauty you can capture.

I liked this prompt! Some new images and some previously taken.

Inspiration: Women reading and writing

I would rather sit and read a book or magazine than do so many other things.  I was looking online for photographs of women reading and I found these by Nina Leen.  She was one of the first female photographers for LIFE Magazine and captured images of fashion, art, and life in the 40s and 50s.  I love these photographs!

No more milkshakes

It has been 2 or 3 weeks since I drafted the post below and I am doing fabulously with my “new” lifestyle.  I feel good, I look better, I have more energy.  I like eating so many fruits and veggies.  The momentum I’ve got going is helping me keep it up.  🙂

 * * * * *

The nice woman on the other end of the phone is telling me that my cholesterol and triglyceride levels are far too high.  I hang up in shock and a tidal wave of disappointment overcomes me.

You see, I used to be very active and would watch everything I ate.  I did a century bike ride in college; at some point I wore size 0.  My husband and I even did Weight Watchers together soon after we got married and we used to go to the gym together in the evenings or take long, brisk walks.  One of my colleagues used to call me “Skinny Ennis.” I wore a pedometer, for goodness sakes! And then I got pregnant and started eating full-fat Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream every night.

In essence, I have completely changed.  At first, I was a bit surprised that I could maintain this type of eating and not look terrible, but then the pounds did start to attach themselves to my tummy and so it seems I’m not exempt from the rule of more calories in than out equals weight gain.  And the recent bloodwork does not lie.  I need to change and this is my wake up call.  I’ve been lazy and really unmotivated.

So after staring into space for a few minutes, I went to the grocery store and bought a lot of fruit, grilled chicken, and some healthy snacks.  I am going to be realistic here… I hate to sweat and it IS summer and I’m not likely to be going for walks until October.  Still, I can stop eating Dove chocolates while reading in bed.  I make a choice every time I put something in my mouth.  I’ll choose a carrot over a chicken nugget.  I think that’s going to make a big difference.  Then, I’ll try to be more active where I can.

Picture Inspiration: 52 Weeks of Photocentric Creativity and Community

Week 6: Seeing Double

Once you’ve started looking for reflections, you can’t stop seeing them.  This week, experiment with different ways to fill the frame with your subject and its ghost.  Play with seeing double this week!

Week 22: Finding Your Tribe

Shed a little light on a feeling of togetherness, belonging and camaraderie. You know, all the stuff that makes our lives so rich and so meaningful!

I took this prompt to be more of a search for my tribe.  I could certainly share pictures of my family, but I decided to think of it in terms of my photography tribe.  When I recently went to get a haircut, this is the view while laying back for a shampoo.  It seemed to fit the prompt topic.

I have been searching for what appeals to me and what I enjoy photographing.  I’m definitely drawn to window boxes and beautiful entryways.
