Photo Friday: where the heart is

Here and there, I’ve had some time to work on some small home projects.  Our house is a wonderful space, but I have been wanting to personalize it and make it more ours.

Wall words over our entry table near our front door

I hung these prints of my macrophotography several months ago on a long wall to the left of a large framed print. I've been looking for what to hang on the right to balance out the display...

... PERFECT! Lyrics to our wedding song, mod-podged with sparkle. I didn't use the glass of the frames.

I saw this wood sign in a craft store and really wanted to paint it and use it somewhere. It's hanging right off the kitchen's door to our driveway and cars so I always hang my purse and any other bags I need right there.

Another entry wall: wall words, a little ledge and some other photos.

I feel content every time I glance at this above our kitchen sink and window.

Playroom: Decals on the double doors (from Target), chalkboard paint on the sliding door, and 3M hooks for the multiple purses and bags my daughter "needs."

A recent IKEA purchase. We were looking for an entry table that was exactly like our console table in the living room, so we decided to just move that one. This works better for our living room anyway because of the storage bins' ability to stash little toys.

At about eye level all the way around the guest bathroom, I hung some of my "artsy" photographs of our daughter and various eye candy.

I’ve completely reorganized our bathroom storage into labeled containers and I’ve also taken our pantry from war zone to usable space.  I now have ample ideas from this awesome magazine for our office.  Now I just need about 15 child-free hours to accomplish them.  🙂

What have you done to make your home more “you?” Do share your secrets in the comments!

Note to self – May 1 OLW bloghop

This post is part of the One Little Word Blog Hop where members of Ali Edwards’ OLW class share their monthly assignments.  Each month, on the 1st of the month, I’ll participate and then give you a link to the next in line (see the full list of participants at the end of this post).

I must share one other funny thing my daughter said.  I told her recently that I am really trying to slow down and enjoy the many great moments in the day, rather than organize the garage, pot more plants, deadhead some flowers, weed the garden, do the dishes, or whatever… you name it.  She said (no idea where she got this), “Yeah, Mommy, because your head might explode.” I hadn’t laughed that much in a while.  She is so right!

Check back on Friday for photos of some recent house projects.

I’m so glad to be part of this blog hop!  Some of the artwork these ladies do is just incredible! Now, hop along to the next OLW post.  She (and each thereafter) will send you on down the list from there until you’ve seen them all.  The rest of the participants are listed below.  I encourage you to visit every blog for more creative fun.

You can read other posts related to my OLW here.

Photo Friday: various nature photos

I took this one from inside my car on a rainy day, waiting to pick up my daughter at preschool.

One aspect of photography, probably the one that speaks to me the most, is that it helps me see the world around me with a slightly different perspective.  Oftentimes, instead of seeing a mess, I see my daughter’s very frequent (as in multiple times a day) play with sand and water to be a beautiful childhood experience for her.  I have a lot of photos of her face in intent concentration, “working” on another magnificent concoction.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments.   I love and treasure each one.  Enjoy your Friday and have a great weekend.

I love how a water drop can simulate a magnifying glass. I also love the dreamy bokeh in the background.

An accidental little flare that I love. And again that background.

My favorite of the four here (you know I have lots more)

Lillies from my parents' garden (fisheye iPhone lens)

LOVE that there's a world inside that tiny drop.

We are not waking a path, but surfing a sea

Oh, Leo, you’ve done it again.  Over and over again I am inspired by Leo Babauta at Zen Habits.  He recently posted (“Why We Overplan“) about why NOT setting goals, when going on vacation or in everyday life, will help us act fluidly and be happier and less stressed, while still achieving a great deal.

“We are not walking a path, but surfing a sea.  Most people look at goal setting as picking a destination, then figuring out a path to get there.  That assumes you’re walking on land that will change very little, and that while you will have unforeseen obstacles, you’ll be on stable ground and the destination won’t move.  That’s not at all true — life is more like the sea, ever changing with no fixed paths or destinations, with swells and currents and waves that change everything at every moment.  The ultimate skill, then, isn’t setting a destination (goal) or a path (plan), but surfing.  In surfing, you take whatever waves come, learn to judge the waves as they come, learn to ride the wave as it changes, not as you planned.  It’s going with the flow (literally), and changing what you do depending on how the flow changes.”

Be sure to check out the whole article and his other posts.  I can apply this to many areas of my own life:

– Parenting for sure: taking each stage (or day for that matter) as it comes and not comparing my child to anyone else’s child or any ideal I have in my own mind.

– My to-do list: I am starting to see it as an evolving and ever-changing constant.  I am always going to have many items on the list.  It’s just a matter of prioritizing the list every day, sometimes multiple times a day, and getting done what I can.

– Marriage: There don’t seem to be these set milestones you’re supposed to reach along a path.  It’s more of a flow as each individual changes and grows… so must the other in a way.  It’s a daily shifting.

What aspect of your life can you apply this to? (I know, I know… I just ended a sentence with a preposition.  Oh well.)  Share in the comments!
