The mom monologues

Points North Magazine, an Atlanta publication, recently asked for submissions about motherhood for their Mother’s Day edition, so I sent them my “Letter to my Daughter” (see original post).  They liked it enough to publish it online here.

Creativity boot camp

It’s Spring Training time! Yes, I know.  We will just be getting home from a week in Italy and I will have to pack and get ready to move to a new house.  I’m crazy.  But this is just too fabulous to miss! Plus, if I don’t have an escape I may get overwhelmed.  This is self preservation here, folks.  🙂

Maegan Beishline developed this two-week course to be “all about artistic exploration…and through that exploration, getting to know yourself as an artist. It is all about doing the work and flexing the creative muscles in an effort to get to the place where you are producing very authentic work…the work of your soul. Each day of the two week course, there will be a different essay on creativity, an activity to go along with that essay, and some ideas for journaling or further thinking. Also, throughout the course, there will be thoughts and inspiration shared by other artists to really dive into the different mediums.”

Half of the registration fee is given to Show Hope, a non-profit organization that mobilizes individuals and communities to meet the most pressing needs of orphans in distress by providing 1) homes for waiting children through adoption aid grants, and 2) life-saving medical care for orphans with special needs.  Show Hope addresses many facets of the worldwide orphan crisis and is making positive and encouraging strides towards a problem that needs this sort of comprehensive attention.

Does anyone want to take this course with me? I can hardly wait!

Full of gratitude

Yesterday afternoon, my daughter and I were sitting at the kitchen table, eating ice cream out of plastic wine goblets, when I said to her, “Isn’t our life great?” She quickly agreed.  (She agrees with just about everything I say these days, so this was no surprise really.) I mean, here we are in the middle of a spring day, with no place we have to be and just enjoying each other’s company.  Sure, one of us probably would have liked to go to Hobby Lobby and the other would have liked to be reading, but that didn’t happen and it was ok.

This morning, we spent a few hours at my grandparents’ house enjoying some snacks and playing together.  How fortunate for us that we get to spend time with them; how fortunate for them to be able to enjoy their great granddaughter! I can always see the love in their eyes when they are with us.

Then, we went to see a house that MAY be our future home.  We are putting in an offer on a lovely, open, well-lit house on a quiet cul-de-sac.  It has everything we are looking for, most especially “that feeling” that I have when I know something’s right.  (Like the first time I met my husband.  Okay, the second time.)

And then there’s the upcoming FREE trip to Italy.  How wonderful is my life?! I can’t even begin to tell you how ridiculous it is that we are disappointed that we aren’t flying First Class.  How lucky are we that we get to go on such a fun-filled trip with so many delicious activities, vistas, meals, people that I can hardly stand it? Did I mention it’s for 8 days and it’s all free? Hee hee. (Well, it did require a wee bit of work for my hubby to get us to that level of success… way to go, love!)

So pinch me please.  We all have our health and we have so much to be thankful for.  So much to look forward to.  So much to enjoy now – right in front of us, even without the house and the trip.  We have each other.

Zen habits, part one

One of my favorite blogs is Leo Babauta’s Zen Habits.  Two recent posts there speak to what I’ve been thinking about lately.  I’ll discuss one today and one tomorrow.

The first is about making time to do what’s most important.  I was telling my husband yesterday that I want to finish a piece I’m working on and submit it to a favorite magazine, create a photography book by July and enter it into a contest, catch up on my daughter’s scrapbook (2.5 months behind… yikes), and take some more photography and writing classes.  This is in addition to an upcoming move and a trip to Italy.  He looked at me like I’m nutty since the only free time I have is naptime and four hours on Wednesdays.

Leo Babauta says on his blog, “Time doesn’t fall into your lap. It isn’t handed to you by a kindly old gentleman. You must create it… Say no to everything else. Put off what can be held at bay for the time being. And create time for what is necessary.  Make something. Bring new creative life into the world, change the lives of others, and in doing so, change yours.  You have the power to create time, and the will to create. Don’t squander it, my friend.” (Read the entire article here.)

I guess I’m going to have to give up a few things in order to spend more time creating.  I’m thinking that the laundry, dishes, bill paying, dinner making, and general housekeeping has got to go.

Just kidding, honey.
