Intuition: the right path makes itself known

Magazine articles, blog posts, and quotations about the power of intuition have been falling into my path lately, so I should probably pay attention to them.  One article mentioned that gut feeling you get when you know you should do something, as well as that warning sign feeling you get when you know you are in danger.  Listening to our body seems to be the main focus.  Everything is connected and the process is about slowing down and turning inward.

I know I’m not alone, but find this so difficult to do! My mind has a habit of complicating things, trying to run through a to-do list, thinking about what’s next in my whirlwind of a day with a young toddler.   It could have been the latest Oprah magazine that had an article that said we already possess all the wisdom we’ve been seeking.

The answers are within.  If I can take even a minute to pause and tune in to my body – to my racing heartbeat or to a pit in my stomach, and ask what I can do for myself or for the situation, there’s usually a simple answer.  I am learning to trust what I know, even if I don’t remember how I know it.  A feeling I get about a person, a sense about which path to take.  If I let my mind be quiet for even a few seconds, I’ll know the right way.  I think this sense has always been there, but my mind has talked over it.

The most useful way I am using this gift is in times of indecision.  I am one that needs an answer and needs it now.  I don’t like open items on lists! And yet, I am learning that sometimes that confusion of not knowing what’s the right thing to do is a sign that I need to stop and put it on the back burner for awhile.  The right answer usually comes.  I can get filled with panic when I don’t resolve something right away, whether it’s which home to purchase (drove my hubby nuts with my impulsiveness), whether my daughter should start preschool (very glad I listened to my gut on this one because now she is definitely ready), or which kitchen sink to order for our new house (acted too quickly and now I have to send one back).  I like it crossed off the list.  And yet, things have a way of working out for the best, so if I can wait and let the proper path unfold, I am usually happier.  The way I’m letting myself do this is by convincing myself that by actively choosing not to resolve something immediately, I am indirectly letting the right answer come forward on it’s own.  That’s very Zen, no? I don’t know if my subconscious is ruminating on a decision without me knowing, if some higher power is working her magic, or if it’s all a bunch of hooey.  What I do know is that it takes some of the pressure off of me.  Try it!

Happy anniversary to me!

“If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in your field of bliss, and they open doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.” ~ Joseph Campbell

Sunday marks the 6 month anniversary of Poetic Aperture.  I was just e-mailing with a friend about how I decided to start my blog.  We were talking about how it’s sort of self-serving to assume that people would be interested in reading your personal thoughts and opinions and how to overcome that.  I remembered that I started this blog as a way forward in pursuing publishing opportunities (otherwise I would have made it a private blog) but mainly for my own record of growth.  I never thought I’d have complete strangers subscribe.  I never thought it would lead me to expand my photography.  I never thought I would make new friends and connections online.  I never thought it would steer me into exploring a photography business.  Who knows where else it’s going to lead?

My online friends from my writing and photography classes have filled a void for me in my life.  It’s a creative connection that has surprisingly spilled over into my “real” life.  It’s such a blessing to have friends of all types who “get” me, laugh with me, share their stories with me, and who are genuinely interested in how I’m doing.  Knowing them, I feel more confidence on a daily basis, more full of love and connection.  I love reading their blogs.  Since there are days that I don’t get to see or talk with a friend, a Facebook update or a heartfelt e-mail from one of these ladies brightens my day immensely.  If blogging were around when I was a teenager, I wonder how much angst and loneliness would have been avoided?

I’ve had such fun with it, which is the main purpose for me.  It’s a creative record of what I’m up to, it reminds me to do something creative every day, and I plan to make it into a book after a year, with all of your comments and encouragement (which I LOVE) included.  It’s so funny that at first I struggled to come up with two posts a week and now I am posting every day and scheduling them in advance because I have so much to say.  I have already written future posts about creative storage, about our house renovation, about this new class I’m taking, about clearing out clutter (yes, again), about intuition, about pets, and so much more.

Thank you all so much for coming with me on this journey!

Picture Inspiration: weeks 5 and 21

Picture Inspiration: 52 Weeks of Photocentric Creativity and Community

Week 5: Infinity and Beyond

Repetitive elements, forms, or shapes can often be best showcased when they are put to work with another effective technique of creating good imagery. Enter the use of a strong diagonal line. Incorporating both repetition and a diagonal can lead the viewer’s eye poetically across the image.  By using a medium to shallow depth of field, it takes the viewer right into infinity.

 Week 21: From the Heart

Discovering ourselves through creativity can be empowering and exciting.  Shooting from the heart transforms our photography as well as our own personal lives.  As you shoot this week, keep your heart in mind.  Shoot with it, through it, because of it.  Capture images where love is in the lead.

Tissue paper heart | Aisle of school supplies: I love, love, LOVE them!

Picture Inspiration is a companion space to the Picture Series classes and consists of weekly photocentric prompts, challenges and projects.  It’s a virtual coffee shop – a place to gather, chat, share photos, glean insignts, ask questions, and get inspired.  Through connection and creativity, we are delving deeper into what it means to use photography to reveal the magic in our everyday lives.

A list of possibilities

I have recently come across several blog posts about life lists (some call it a master list or a bucket list) and how important they are to reaching a goal (two great posts are here and here).  The act of trying to come up with a list and writing it all down is a huge step in actually realizing a dream.  I may never have known I wanted to do these things, but now that I’ve brainstormed and written them down, they are in the forefront of my mind and I am more likely to take action on some of them if the opportunity arises.   People recommend you come up with 100 things you’d like to accomplish before your time is up… I don’t even have a third of that but I’m having trouble coming up with more items to list here.  What’s on your list?

Publish a book of my photography | Transfer home videos to DVD | Take my daughter to Israel | Volunteer at a soup kitchen with my family | Have one of my photos published in National Geographic | Begin a photography business | Visit 10 National Parks | See the Grand Canyon | Learn to scuba dive | Visit Australia | Scuba dive/take pictures photographs in the Great Barrier Reef | Go on an African Safari | Go on an Alaskan cruise — we are going this summer!!! | Learn more about underwater photography | Take a Mediterranean cruise | Do a 365 photo project | Take ballroom dancing classes with my husband | Go back to that place along the Seine in Paris where they have ballroom dancing and join in | Take a black & white photography class | See an active volcano up close | See hot springs up close | Spend more time with animals | Write a novel | Learn enough Italian to converse comfortably | Visit the Taj Mahal | Leave the world a tangibly better place | Take a painting class | Meet someone I hugely admire | Make my mom’s challah | Live in another country for a significant period of time | Volunteer for the board of an organization I admire | Reach 100 subscribers on my blog | Take tap dance lessons | Find a synagogue we love and attend regularly | Take a Photoshop class | Play a ukulele | Try being a travel writer/photographer

How to feel happier right now

I get a daily happiness e-mail from The Happiness Project and every Wednesday is Tip Day.  This article ran about a month ago but I keep coming back to it, and so I’m posting it here so I’ll remember it and also because maybe some of you may like it as well. I’ve printed out the list below and am determined to schedule some of these things into my life on a regular basis.  When I am active, reaching out to friends, or involved in something larger than myself, I DO feel better.  I suppose the real trick is to remember this list when I’m feeling not-so-peppy.

In Want to Feel Happier By the End of the Day? Your Menu of Options, Gretchen says: When you’re feeling blue, it can be hard to muster up the physical and mental energy to do the things that make you happier.  However, the more you push yourself, the better you’ll feel; but if you can’t tackle a big task, just do something small. Even a little step in the right direction will give you a lift.

According to my ground-breaking happiness formula, to be happy, you need to think about feeling good, feeling bad, and feeling right, in an atmosphere of growth. What’s dragging you down? Is it a lack of fun, of connection? Do you feel a lot of guilt, boredom, or anger? Do you feel that something’s “not right” about your life? Do you feel stagnant or stuck? Focus your efforts on the choices that will do the most to address what’s not working in your life.

Your menu of choices — commit to doing as many items as you can:

Friends
__ call or email one of your closest friends
__ call or email three friends to whom you haven’t spoken in a while
__ track down an old friend who has drifted out of your life

Fun
__ add a fun thing to your calendar
__ better, add a fun thing to your calendar that involves other people
__ best, add a fun thing to your calendar that involves other people doing something outside

Challenge
__ think of a subject that you wish you knew more about (be honest! something that really interests you!) and spend 15 minutes on the internet reading about it
__ take a step toward acquiring a new skill that you want – research Italian classes in your neighborhood, investigate Photoshop
__ if you absolutely can’t think of one single subject that interests you, visit two bookstores (one huge chain, one independent) and browse until some book catches your attention – and buy it

Do good, feel good
__ sign up to be an organ donor, and remember to tell your family
__ give $25 or more to a worthy cause
__ sign up to volunteer or participate in an organization

Energy
__ walk around the block
__ do ten jumping-jacks
__ go the gym or go for a run

Order
__ clear out the space around your computer
__ clear out a closet
__ walk through your house with a garbage bag, and clear clutter until the bag is full of trash; then walk around again and fill a new bag with things to be given away; repeat

Guilt
__ make a dentist’s or doctor’s appointment that you’ve been putting off
__ reach out to a family member whom you’ve been neglecting
__ make something right: apologize, confess, repair, replace, or return something you borrowed

Nagging tasks
__ clean out three old emails that you haven’t answered
__ stop off at the drugstore to buy supplies you need
__ stop off at the hardware store to buy supplies you need
__ fix something broken

Good citizen
__ Throw away someone else’s litter
__ Be helpful to an elderly person or a person with small kids
__ Be friendly to a store clerk who seems grouchy

What’s new with the house?

We have been selecting all kinds of things this weekend – our ceiling fans, our kitchen sink, our bathroom lighting, our cabinet stain color.  We are still looking for our cabinet hardware and for our dining and kitchen light fixtures, but there’s no real rush on that.  We went to some granite yards and found this for our kitchen, which should complement the dark cabinets nicely.  The picture definitely makes it look darker than it actually is.

After today’s electrical inspection, we can install insulation and then sheetrock.  I think walls will really help in visualizing us living there!  The cabinets will be hung and secured into place toward the end of the week and then we can measure for the granite, to be installed next week.  (Photo: kitchen desk and island, bar area with cutouts for double oven and pantry, our carpenter sawing away, cabinet fronts)

We also begin painting/staining the exterior today!!! The brick will be a light creamy tan and the window frames and posts will be Burnished Walnut.  (The kitchen and bath cabinets will be the darker Walnut Wainscot.)

I’ve been trying to find the right paint colors for our bedrooms.  Can there be more options for a soothing green? For the main rooms, we are pretty sure we’re going to use the light brown that I made up for our former house.  I tweaked it so many times, having the folks at Sherwin Williams add a little bit more blue or a little bit more white, until we found a shade of brown we liked.  We call it “Naomi.” Our daughter’s room will be a VERY light pink (we thought we picked a hint of pink for her room before and it was definitely too pink).  The playroom? The office? Our bedroom? Should the curved entry wall be an accent color? Sherwin Williams has a color visualizer online where you upload a picture of your room and you can literally paint with any of their colors to see how it’ll look.  I’m having trouble with it, maybe because I’m trying to paint studs, so we’ll see if I can try again when we have actual walls.  🙂

So all that, plus working through all the mortgage details, and all day with my daughter.  It’s fun to see it all come together.  Busy, busy!!
