Photography as sight training

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” ~ Dorthea Lange

When I was in high school and needed some quiet, I would go sit on the beach.  Aside from a fisherman or two, my spot was empty time after time.  Mostly, I’d just sit in my car and stare at the waves.  I always drove away calmer.

These days, I don’t live near a beach and I have been looking for some quiet places to escape, even for just a few minutes.  When the babysitter arrives and I have a break, I don’t know where to go.  Honestly, I’d rather stay home but my daughter incessantly interrupts me.  I’ve tried a few coffee shops but some have loud music, some have spotty internet connections, and some have some version of that person at the next table annoying me with her little pen taps and incessant throat clearing.

So I turn to photography to calm my nerves and give my eyes a place to rest.  And it really helps! In any stressful situation, I find I can always find something poetic and timeless about some part of it.

Do you feel the same?

Seeing holiness in an ordinary moment

Just wanted to share a moment from yesterday.  It’s a simple one, but yet extraordinary at the same time.  This little hummingbird of a toddler sitting in front of me and singing with wild abandon was just so joyous to me.

My daughter playing guitar - those little toes get me every time!

“When your life is filled with the desire to see the holiness in everyday life, something magical happens: Ordinary life becomes extraordinary, and the very process of life begins to nourish your soul.”        Rabbi Harold Kushner

Bliss List #4 and Photo Friday

Today I’m participating again in Liv Lane’s Follow Your Bliss bloghop.  Liv writes, “Every Friday, I will share a list of the bliss in my midst, reflecting on moments over the past week where I’ve caught myself in a sense of wonder, contentment, and true joy. It’s like a gratitude list, but rather than just being thankful for the things I have…I want to be thankful for the way I feel – even if it’s fleeting – and celebrate whatever brought me to that bliss.”  Feel free to join us!

Here’s where I found bliss over the past week:

Hubby and I escaped to the lake this weekend and carved out a little quiet for ourselves.  It was rainy and so we lazed about and enjoyed the peace.  We built a fire each night and watched it for hours.  It was heavenly!

My sweet girl felt so good about making this keychain for me with her babysitter’s help.  Her smile as she brought it out from behind her back was so heartwarming.  I immediately thought of this bliss list!

A dear friend gave me this lovely artwork and I’ve hung it up somewhere in our home where I can enjoy it every day.  Her choice of wording really warms my heart.

Part of the same weekend trip, we wandered in some funky shops and I also got to spend a few hours in my favorite independent bookstore.  The pictures below are nothing fabulous, just a few from our weekend.  Enjoy!

Where did you find bliss this week?

Happy weekend everyone!

The art of now

A perfect place to stop

Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have.  ~ Eckhart Tolle

* * *

A 2008 article from Psychology Today somehow popped into my life recently, right when I most needed it.

“Living in the moment—also called mindfulness—is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present. When you become mindful, you realize that you are not your thoughts; you become an observer of your thoughts from moment to moment without judging them.  Mindfulness involves being with your thoughts as they are, neither grasping at them nor pushing them away. Instead of letting your life go by without living it, you awaken to experience.”

This sounds so simple, and yet it is quite difficult.  I am usually not able to do it for more than a few seconds.  I’m in the moment, noticing the warmth of sunlight on my arms and then I’m thinking about the mail and before I know it, it’s in my hands and I’m opening it and that moment is gone.  I forget to feel the paper in my hands or really hear the sound of the envelope as I open it.

I love the idea of being slightly detached and really noticing my own reactions to things without burrowing down into the emotion of them.  I’ve started using this strategy with my daughter and it’s really helped me in retaining some energy for the end of the day.  In not losing myself to her behavior, I am better able to direct my own experience of the day.  It makes perfect sense.  If we picture that we are a mountain, weathering each storm or wind but strong within, it feels right to remain calm and to notice our surroundings without becoming them.

I only wish I’d learned this in high school!

How do you find moments of NOW?

More iPhone macro lens shots

iPhone macro lens from Photojojo.com (seen here with wide angle lens attached as well)

I am still loving my new iPhone macro lens.  This time I got beyond my own house… all the way to the butterfly center at our Science Museum.  Since I first posted about it two weeks ago, I know of 7 people who have bought one.  Don’t you think I should be getting a kickback or something???

This guy let me get literally a few millimeters away from him!

These little flowers were TINY

Life as preparation

Do any of you ever feel that your life thus far has been necessary to lead you to where you are and to help launch your next contribution? I’ve been feeling this way for a few years.  It is how a dear friend and I decided to raise funds to build a school in Cambodia.  We felt pulled to do something larger than ourselves.

Motherhood didn’t feel right for me until I’d reached a certain point.  I needed those years in grad school and in the workplace to prepare myself, to get to the point where I could put myself second much of the time.

I want to become a better human being.  I want to contribute to this crazy world we live in.  I want to use my life to spread peace and joy.

Whatever creative project is coming next, and I feel there is something brewing, I don’t feel any pressure to make it emerge quickly.  If this theory is correct, then every day I am collecting experiences and thoughts that will help me work toward becoming the person I need to be to make it happen.

How exciting! Share your own experiences…
