More Picture Color memories

Continuing yesterday’s post about my Picture Color class…

What’s Your Shade: Many of us begin our day by applying some kind of color shade to our own personal palette.  Today, share a little something from your “beauty regime.” Can you tell a story of you by framing a shade or tint?  We porcelain beauties need some help looking not-so-pasty.  The makeup almost matches the countertop.

Corrugated Color: Sometimes the combination of color and texture can make a shot that much more interesting.  Today, seek out solid colors that are more interesting because of the texture that they hold.  Even more than a study of color, consider this a study in the surface of your subject matter and how that affects its color. This is a marble fountain.  I had to capture the repetition of the concentric circles.

Ambient Yellow: Shooting in low light, specifically shooting indoors and at night with no flash can be a challenge.  Today, I want you to celebrate the color or ambient light, the surrounding light within an environment.  Capturing ambient light in your images usually gives them a golden, yellow color cast.  This is the edge of a mirror.  I like the texture and the tones.

Inspired by Color: Because so much about the Picture Series is about the community support, encouragement and inspiration, capture an image as an ode to another photographer.  When it comes to color, no two people see it quite the same way.

One person inspired many in the class to try this color palette Photoshop technique where you extract colors from your photo and put them in squares on the bottom.

One person took a gorgeous raindrop picture so I was inspired when it finally rained here to capture this one.  It reminds me of a French Impressionist painting.

Heavy Metal: From bronze to silver to gold, metallic “color” surrounds us every day.  Whether it’s shiny or brushed, polished or patina, looking at metallic surfaces gives us a whole new way to study color.  Coax out the beauty of your subject today.  I usually don’t think buildings are beautiful, but I loved the reflection on this one.

Piecing it all Together: Have you ever noticed how pretty colors look when they are all laid out together, like in a quilt, a mosaic, or on paint chips? As we wrap up Picture Color, let’s go out with a celebratory bang!

House renovation update

The new house is moving along quickly! Come September, our apartment’s LOUD, stomping upstairs neighbors will be but a memory.  Yesterday our designer and I selected and purchased our kitchen appliances.  I am beyond excited to have:

– Jenn-Air 30″ double wall oven with V2 vertical dual fan convection system

It’s just unbelievable : 7″ full color touch LCD display (they call it the ipod interface), no need to preheat, delay start, keep warm option, AND it guides you through how to bake anything.

Say you want to bake a roast, which I’ve never done because I wouldn’t know where to begin.  You select the type of meat from a menu and select NEXT.  You tell it the weight and select NEXT.  You tell it the type of pan you are using because cook time/temperature varies from a roasting tin to a 13×9 glass dish, etc.  You can even tell it what time you want to serve dinner and it’ll start when necessary.  Unbelievable, right?

 – Jenn-Air 36″ gas cooktop

– Jenn-Air Trifecta dishwasher

Sharp 24″ microwave drawer: this thing is cool.  It will go in the island.  It’s child-proof, which would be the only way we could put it low enough for our daughter to access.

OK, enough already.  On to the pictures! There’s still a lot of work to do to the outside (painting brick and trim, landscaping), but it’s already much better.

There you have it.  By tomorrow, all the kitchen cabinet boxes will be in place and the carpenter will begin constructing our custom drawers and cabinet doors.  More on this, of course, soon.  [If I haven’t texted/called/e-mailed you back, now you know why.]

Picture Color memories

The Picture Color class is coming to a close today and it has been so wonderful for me.  Not only do the daily prompts open my eyes to new ways of viewing the world around me, but the community is as amazing as the photography.  Every day we are all posting pictures in the online gallery of how we have interpreted the prompt and then we get immediate and encouraging feedback from each other.  It’s as fun to see everyone’s photos as it is to receive the compliments on my own.  Being part of this group has enriched me and it has been such a treat to have daily contact with them.  I’d say I am going to miss it but I’m continuing with Picture Inspiration.

Below is an excerpt of a few of the prompts and my photo for each:

Blissed Out on Color: Take notice of the colors you choose to surround yourself with. What colors bliss you out? Capture something that celebrates your bliss!    I was surprised to learn that I’m drawn to purple.  I don’t have much of it in my surroundings so I’ll have to change that.

Iconic Color: Observe all the many colors that go hand in hand with something you’d consider iconic.  I wasn’t the only one in the class who chose Starbucks.  It’s a morning starter for many.  One person even commented that the sign can make her day sometimes.  Another said that Starbucks owns dark green.

Technicolor Vision: June is a month of celebration… of birthdays, dreams of summer, and long fun-filled days.  Find something today that offers a kind of Technicolor merriment.  Go bold, go bright, and go beautiful today with a burst of color at its most boastful!

The Color of Comfort: Our choice of color often mirrors how we feel.  Some colors lift our spirits while other soothe them.  Is there a color that harkens confort to you?   I love my bed.  I love crisp white hotel linen and soft sheets.  This just makes me want to climb inI make my bed every day and I love how inviting it looks every time I walk by.

 Nothing But Blue Skies prompt

The Color of Light: Using direct dunlight as a photographic tool can yield perhaps the most beautifully unpredictable results.  Share today the color of light, just how you see it.

The Color of Happy: When you find your happy colors to shoot today, don’t forget to experiment with different ways to express the feeling you want to convey in your shot. It’s normally not color alone that makes the shot burst with joy, it’s the way it’s captured. Have fun with happy today!

         Come back tomorrow for more!

Self-care

I spend most of my time caring for others and I often forget that my needs are important.  Let’s just say that I’ve got lots to learn about cultivating self-kindness, accepting where I am and identifying what I need at any given moment.  I’m definitely getting better at it, but still I usually push through my to-do list before allowing myself any sense of a break.

On an ideal day, I’d sleep in, read in bed, leisurely browse through a bookstore, get a massage, work on creative projects the rest of the day, and then go out to dinner with my husband.  Maybe that day will happen someday, but in the meantime, how am I going to take care of myself today? I am going to try to remember to ask myself what it is I need, to check in with myself more often.  Perhaps I should treat myself as I’d treat a dear friend.  Right now I need a cup of tea… well, I’d be happy to get that for me!

Picture Inspiration: weeks 1 and 17

Picture Inspiration: 52 Weeks of Photocentric Creativity and Community

Picture Inspiration is a companion space to the Picture Series classes and consists of weekly photocentric prompts, challenges and projects.  It’s a virtual coffee shop – a place to gather, chat, share photos, glean insignts, ask questions, and get inspired.  Through connection and creativity, we are delving deeper into what it means to use photography to reveal the magic in our everyday lives.

Since I started this class last week, 17 weeks after it began in February, I’m doing the current week and a catch-up week until I’m caught up with the rest of the class.  Luckily, I’m not alone in doing this! Below are excerpts from the long email we get with our assignment for the week.

Week 1: This is all about you

We start things off this week with self-portraits.  Capture your heart and soul.   Show us a part of you that you are comfortable sharing. A little glimpse of you in a reflection, your shoes, or even a more abstract symbol of who you are. Shoot and share whatever moves you. This is a shot of YOU.  Only YOU can capture YOU.  Have fun this week discovering yourself!

Week 17: Moody

This week, capture in your images a moodiness of sorts… not any mood in particular.  You have permission to explore your feelings and moods through your lens.  Show us something that you are really feeling this week.

This week I’m projecting calm but underneath that are some swirling currents of anticipation or unsettled feelings.

Water droplets as art

Someone in my Picture Color class recently posted an amazing picture of a water droplet… and my obsession began.  I’ve spent a lot of time trying to capture one too.  It is addictive! I love how beautiful the water drops are here… they pick up the color of whatever is around them.  Aren’t they cool?

Warning: Don’t try this unless you have at least an hour and there are no toddlers nearby.
