Soulful home: bring in Spring! (April prompt)

Garden glories“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.”
~ Hal Borland

For so many, this winter has been particularly harsh.  I know so many of us are ready for some springtime blooms and sunshine.  This month is all about bringing that brightness inside for ourselves and our families to enjoy.

Some ideas:

  • buy some fresh flowers and spread them in little vases throughout the house
  • add pops of vibrant colors or flower art/fabric around the house
  • bring in a flowery scent – I really like all-natural lavender dish soap and cleaning supplies
  • eat lighter
  • open your windows
  • freshen your air with houseplants
  • Spring clean: clear some clutter again

I live in Houston, where it’s been mostly ideal weather the past couple weeks.  Our garden has exploded with buds and I’ve been trying to keep the windows and shades open as much as possible to bring the outdoors IN!

Crepe myrtle

I’m excited that we are going to be planting some flowering climbing vines along this boring garage wall.  There’s cement on the ground there, so I built a long planter with treated wood and drain holes.  And by “I,” I mean Mike, the handyman.

When we were in Boulder, I found this wind chime in a little shop and adored its sound.  Last night, when I was in bed reading a book, I heard it chime and I got chills because it’s such a lovely sound.

Please let us all know in the comments what you’re up to this month! Have fun with it.  🙂 May’s prompt will add to this one and encourage us to focus on what scents mean to you and how you can incorporate them into your living space.

  1. All last month our home was filled with the scent of daphne blooms. Oh my goodness, it is the most exquisite flower. In a week or two, we’ll be bringing lilacs indoors, and big, floppy bouquets of rhododendrons. It is such a glorious time of year!

This is the time of the year when I start touring the backyard to see what is popping through . . . so far tulip leaves . . . once the blossoming starts, it’s something new every day. Heavenly!

So happy that Spring has finally sprung around here. I love watching the daffodils and tulips poking up through the ground and then picking a few to paint. I also have a similar wind chime and I can listen to that for a long time while relaxing in the yard.
    Enjoy the Spring!

  5. Here in Minnesota, the snow has just melted enough for me to start my daily stroll around my yard to spot the sprouts beginning to grow. It’s nice to see your colorful blooms and know that spring will indeed come to the North! Thanks for sharing! (Great idea with the planters along the garage!)

  8. Today is the second day that the dandelions are nodding their yellow crowns. Bonanza, our rabbit, is so happy! Had the doors and windows open a few days ago however today rain is threatening. So Poppy (dog) and I went for a brisk walk for an hour. It was lovely.

Opening all the doors and windows. Sitting in the sunshine with my morning tea. Watching the cats stretched out in the sun. Checking to see if the seeds have come up yet. I love spring.

We have been in Florida for the winter and I have been soaking up sunshine and beach views because we will be heading north to Indiana in a few days. I always love going through all the different states….spring colors will be bursting in some and barely making an appearance in others.

Today it’s warm enough to open the windows and bring the spring inside. I didn’t realize how stale the house felt until the fresh air came in. Love this time of year!

  13. In my front planter in Boulder I have these huge lavender plants, maybe 5 feet tall and many years old. They smell so good when they are in bloom. They hum with bees too. 🙂 Even cutting back the dead stalks makes my pruning saw smell good. I have a couple of daffodils that somehow started growing there. I didn’t plant them, and they blooming now. Lovely pictures. Happy spring to you!

    • Naomi says:

I’m still kicking myself for not realizing that you live in Boulder. I’d love to meet you in person! Lavender plants sound like a marvelous idea.
