There are some who would say I’m very foolish brave because I allow my daughter to do so many craft projects with me. Sometimes I’m not finished with something when I need to stop and pick her up from preschool and the only way I’ll get to work on it is to let her create right alongside me and even (gasp!) use my supplies. I love that my daughter will keep a scrap of paper or a piece of cardboard because “we can use it in an art project.”
During a painting project one afternoon a couple of weeks ago, everything was moving along smoothly until I went to the sink to wash my brushes. I was away from the table for 30 seconds at the most and this is what I came back to…
So now we mostly do our projects in the backyard. 🙂
She had claimed these picture frame backs and decorated them with princess tape but then she wanted to paint them. Perhaps you can tell which are mine and which are hers? A true mixed-media artist (emphasis on the second syllable please… art-EEst), my sweet girl started pouring sand onto the paint. Then water.
Keep in mind that while she is doing all this, I am working very hard on restraining myself from intervening. After all, she’s wearing her paint clothes and we’re outside, right? Still, it was tough for me!
I actually thought this sand look was pretty cool. Then she started adding wet sand. Ugh.
Nothing like a hot lava look, right? It was a very cool process to watch. Just her flow of ideas and her actions were interesting. I’m proud of myself that I could get out of the way and enjoy her creations. 🙂 Plus, the grass looks pretty colorful now.
And I’ve saved the best for last.

This is fantastic…oh, how I wish I could paint with the freedom and innocence of a child. And you are instilling in her a love of creativity that will hopefully never leave her. Kudos to you! 🙂

I LOVE it! I try really hard when working with my little ones not to have an expected outcome. But I haven’t had a free for all in the grass! I need to try it! Our latest was picture frames for Mother’s Day gifts. They actually did a pretty nice job. But trying to keep 3 of them corralled, I took NO pictures. I can’t believe I did that!

I’m sure it was hard to stay silent, but good for you for letting her follow her own instincts with her art! I did have to laugh when she added the wet sand though!
